Re: Cubs Player Potential Discussion: 2013 OSFM roster
I should also ask, who are the catchers you have in now? I'm guessing Castillo, Clevenger, Navarro, Boscan and Brenly. So one of Contreras, Lopez or Krist would work.
I'm also guessing that if Clevenger does make the 25 man roster that they will pick up a has been/career minor leaguer that gets released by another team for Iowa.
Right now its those five you listed and Lopez.
I'd probably go with Krist out of those two since he is further along. I'm not that familiar with Krist, where would you put him potential wise?Last edited by MrOldboy; 03-27-2013, 10:27 PM.Comment

Re: Cubs Player Potential Discussion: 2013 OSFM roster
He profiles as a reliever right now and should be listed as such for the roster. But, the Cubs will give him a chance to start if he shows good command and development of his offspeed stuff this yearComment

Contreras is the only Catcher in the system who has potential to have gap power + nice hit tool while being a plus defensively. He's a prospect, the other two are more organizational guys.Comment

krist is right there with Lopez. Possibly a tick lower. Both profile as decent backups, so potential wise i'd go with C-/D+

Reading around that seems to be the plan. Shove him through waivers and hope no one claims him.
Unless they really want a long man in the bullpen since Villanueva got a rotation spot.
I'm hoping Takahashi gets the spot, looking at them both this spring I think I'd much prefer having him in there over Wade at this point.Comment

I'd probably put him at a solid C. He is a little raw but with lots of potential. I pulled those comments on him from Cubs Den. They talk to scouts and organizational people when they do their write ups so they are usually pretty accurate.Comment

Re: Cubs Player Potential Discussion: 2013 OSFM roster
I'd just throw any of the catchers in there. I think that should be Noble or Krist personally, since we'll probably end up removing them for whoever the backup is in Iowa.
A couple notes from Keith Law, this is from a couple of days back:
"The two Cubs arms of note on Sunday came in at opposite ends of the spectrum. Starling Peralta, who was selected by Arizona in the Rule 5 draft this winter but quickly returned to the Cubs, touched 97 and sat around 94 with an inconsistent slider, slurvy at 75 mph, but with real bite at 81 in on a left-handed hitter's hands. There's some effort there but I can see why a team would at least pay $25,000 -- per Rule 5 guidelines -- for an extra look. Robert Whitenack, however, looked awful in his comeback from 2010 Tommy John surgery, sitting 85-87, way below what he was pre-surgery. He's a cautionary tale for every one of us (myself included) who looks at that operation as risk-free. Most guys come all the way back, but maybe one in 10 don't."
I can't remember exactly, but I think we had Whitenack as a C+/B- guy...should we stick with that? I know that one report from one scout isn't a nail in the coffin, but those are some scathing words...Last edited by skow05; 03-28-2013, 09:40 AM.Cubs

Wondering what you guys think of Lim Chang-Yong? I think he is a little old and coming off tommy johns for the second time doesn't help. But if he can keep up his speed and the good movement he had he could be a good guy in the bullpen. Would have liked to seen this signing five years ago.Comment

Re: Cubs Player Potential Discussion: 2013 OSFM roster
Yeah he'll be 37 next year which isn't a positive for him. I was watching a video of him and he is sick. All I ask is that he pitches in 2014 cause I want to see him. He can pitch from three different arm slots and from the video his 2seamer is nasty.Comment

Yong does look pretty nasty, but I never really considered him for the set. I thought that younger prospects are what should go in first and there are plenty who wont even make it in.
edit: I'm going through the player's secondary positions, if there are any players you guys think should have a secondary. For example Javier Baez will have 3B since he may move over there. Things like that, even if they haven't played there before. Knight said its better to have them play too many positions that be limited down the road.Last edited by MrOldboy; 03-28-2013, 02:52 PM.Comment

Re: Cubs Player Potential Discussion: 2013 OSFM roster
He's still raw but is athletic and has potential for plus power. Potential wise, as of right now, i'd have him at a solid C+. If he reaches his potential i'd project him at .260-.280 10-15hrs decent OBP, takes some walks but will probably strike out a bit.Comment

Re: Cubs Player Potential Discussion: 2013 OSFM roster
I have him at a B-. I can remake him as a C or C+ if you guys feel he has dropped off a bit. Or I can adjust his ratings to something lower and it would take longer or he may never reach his ceiling, similar to what seanjeezy said about Vitters being an A potential.
