Which is why I like default for this. The CPU will still pound corners but not constantly, and they will still leave mistakes over the middle of the plate.
A good example of this is, while watching the Yanks Angels game the other day the Angels brought Jepsen in to pitch. Now this guy throws in the mid to high 90's but sometimes with little control, and Micheal Kay, the Yanks announcer, made a coment about it. Well when I played LAA in my season Jepsen came in. Threw 97-98 but didn't hit the plate much. I think after I checked he threw only 51% strikes.

That's about what I experienced through 13 games with sliders where solid hits were zeroed out.

There's always about the right amount of hits, just not enough run producing hits ... even when using one of the most potent lineups in the game.

There seems to be a fine line with increasing pitching sliders (control and consistency) and doing enough slider alteration to compensate for the batters. Basically, the most common slider sets, increase pitching, and decrease hitting, and the results feature games where the runs per game average is significantly below average (for example, last year the ChiSox were the 3rd lowest scoring team in baseball and averaged 4.47 runs per game). Most games should be in the 5-4, 6-3 range.

I find in my games that if control is left at 5, there's too much offense (no matter who is pitching). With control at 6 or greater, the non-hr extra base hits seem to suffer, and the games are for the most part singles and homers. Most often I have consistency equal to or slightly greater than the control.

But like I said, with control at 6, there seems to be so many quality pitches that even when they're struck well, with good hitters, the result is far too often singles. So, we get things like 3 runs on 13 hits or something like that.

Some of it is due to very few of us approaching the 6.6 walks per game that account for more baserunners without additional hits. I don't think there's a good way of reaching that without skewing the sliders in such a way that pitchers will be doing anything but throwing the ball all over the place (and it's like that with virtually every video game).

I'm thinking of trying control at 6, so the pitchers will pitch to the edges slightly more than they do with control at 5, but having consistency at 5, so the better pitchers will hit their spots more often and the average and below pitchers will miss a little more, both in and out of the zone (in theory anyway). I think the more one moves away from default, the more skewed the results/gameplay becomes, so I try to keep things in the 4 to 6 range on sliders, or move up/down a level if need be.

With anything greater (higher numbers) than control at 6 and consistency at 6, the game becomes a showcase of marksmen, and I get things like Freddy Garcia shutting out Texas, a potent lineup (Actually, the Garcia shut out was followed up by Peavy's 1-hit shutout ... then I realized con = 6 cons = 7 was not the way to go for me). I repeated the mistake later on with the Cardinals and saw Brad Penny and Jamie Garcia completely dominate Milwaukee. It works in my favor, it's just not realistic.

There's always going to be "good games" and the game will be fun because the engine and gameplay is high quality ... but I'm always striving to get long term results to match (as close as possible) the MLB per game averages. I usually come pretty close. Always looking for the "sweet spot" with sliders, without making it into a "second job".

Anyway, just discussing. But, if runs per game are good, I'm happy ... since that's the most important stat for "realism", as long as all the runs aren't coming via the long ball. Pitch totals and strike % seem to be pretty realistic no matter what the sliders are (within reason), also factoring in how the user approaches the situation (taking pitches, pitching in and out of the zone, etc).
Good post. I am going to try control at 5 and consistency at 6. I use classic pitching though. I don't mind pitchers missing, but with consistency at 5 there seemed to be too many pitches missing badly. Seems like either the pitch was right on, or wildly off, even with a pitcher like Greinke. At 6 it seemed to be a bit more under control.

The solid hits slider seems to be very sensitive. At 0, I was actually getting a nice mix of homers, doubles, triples, and singles. Even off good pitchers. I decided to try it at 1 from reading some posts on slider forums, but there were simply too many rockets being hit. When an average hitter pulls a laser beamed 384 foot homer on a Zack Greinke nasty fastball on the outside corner at the knees, I just don't see that as realistic results. In general there were too many hits and even the outs were rockets that happened to be at someone. Solid hits at 0 provides a much better hit variety. Just as long as you keep the other hitting sliders within 1 click of default.

Yup. The caveat being, if you want contact lower (to reduce ease of hitting, lower overall batting averages) you have to raise solid hits to re-increase the hit variety. eg. I have contact 1, solid hits 3 (4?).

          Game #9 of the Season

          BOSTON(ME) 1 @ MINNESOTA(CPU) 5

Wakefield vs. Liriano was the pitching matchup. Liriano was able to wiggle out of jams and get some key double plays. Jim Thome hit 2 HR's and his 2nd one was a mammoth blast off of Schoeneweis that traveled 441 feet. Kevin Youkilis hit his 1st HR of the season. Youkilis has been struggling very badly as he is hitting just .091 through 9 games.

The Red Sox are no 5-4 on the season and head home for a 4 game series vs. Tampa Bay

            Game #10 of the Season

            Tampa Bay(CPU) 2 @ Boston(ME) 3

Josh Beckett was dominating until the 7th inning when Shoppach launched a 2-run homer over the green monster. The Red Sox were able to piece together a couple rallys and should have scored a few more runs. Victor Martinez hit into a DP with the bases loaded and 1 out to kill a rally in the 5th and then I screwed up on the bases and hit the wrong button which sent Ellsbury back to 3rd base when he would have scored easily. Jonathan Papelbon picked up his 5th save of the season. The Red Sox are now 6-4 on the season.

              Game #11 of the Season

              Tampa Bay(CPU) 6 @ Boston(ME) 8

This was a back and forth game as the teams traded leads early before Boston finally pulled away late in the game. Mike Cameron and Marco Scutaro went back to back in the 7th inning. Scutaro finished the game just a double shy of the cycle. Kelly Shoppach hit a solo HR off Papelbon in the 9th but Papelbon was able to slam the door and pick up his 6th save of the season.

                Game #12 of the Season

                Tampa Bay(CPU) 4 @ Boston(ME) 2

This game was a pitchers duel between Lester and Garza that turned into 13 inning marathon. Tampa got to Scott Atchison in the top of the 13th for 2 runs. Rafael Soriano slammed the door in the bottom of the 13th for the save. The Red Sox had a chance to win it when they loaded the bases in the bottom of the 12th for Pedroia, but Dan Wheeler was able to get Pedroia to ground out to end the threat.

John Lackey gave the Red Sox a quality start as he pitched into the 8th inning before getting pulled after giving up a couple hits. Kevin Youkilis is finally starting to heat up after a horrendous start to his season. Bill Hall contributed a double and HR as he got the start in LF to give Ellsbury a day off against the lefty. Pat Burrell hit a rare triple for the Rays as he looped a line drive down the RF line and the ball rolled into the corner, anyone besides Burrell probably would have had an inside the park HR.

The Red Sox are now 8-5 on the season and will host the Texas Rangers for a 3 games series next.

                        Tank,

I am using your sliders but after 1 month, I am seeing very low extra base hits totals. I only have 30 doubles and 2 triples. I hardly ever hit a double in a game, the ball just never seems to get into the alley and when it does, the ball floats there and the outfielder makes the catch. I also have yet to see a ball hit sharply down either line into the corner.

try raising solid hits a notch or two and test it out. When I do I lower power to compensate

I'll try that. I'll lower power to 5 and raise solid hits to 1.

Well, launched my 2010 Season last night after waiting for updates/patches/etc... and after about 30 games of slider tweaking from this set, off I went.

A chilling 33 degrees at the start of the game was not enough to keep away the faithful, and the crowd was treated to quite a game.

Beckett goes 1-2-3 in the top half with a very nice 12 pitch effort to get the offense to the plate.

Sabathia walked Ells on four pitches to start the back half, Ells stole second, Pedroia moved him to third on a fielder's choice, and then V-Mart blasted a 411 foot bomb over everything to take and early 2-0 lead.

Beckett had his good stuff working and scattered 7 hits through 7 innings with 2 walks and 6K's. He was just one batter over the limit until the 5th inning when an error and some shoddy decision making on my part tied the game 2-2

By the way, something I did not realize until last night. Curtis Granderson worked a walk and while leading off first base, the controller vibrated when he took that extra step in his lead from first. Honestly, I never knew that the game did this, but after throwing over to first, he took his regular lead, and it didn't do it on the next pitch. I got to a 2-1 count, and I felt the vibration, and saw him take that extra step. I called a Pitch-Out, he took off, and he was out by 5 feet. So, for those that did not realize this, keep on the lookout (or feel) for the tell-tale vibration...

Game was tied until the 8th when Petey leads off the inning with a triple on a missed dive by Granderson. V-mart doubles in the gap, and after the smoke clears, Sox are up 4-2.

Out comes Paplebon who gives up a single to Posada, then walks the next batter, and we have first and third, after what should have been an easy double play gets dropped on the exchange by Scutaro.

Single by Johnson scores Posada and moves Jeter to second. Up comes A-Rod. Paps strikes out A-Rod and now two outs for Texiera. Tex rifles the first pitch into right field, and without any hesitation, Drew picks up the ball and fires a missile to the plate and Martinez tags out Jeter's tying run at the dish to end the game....

Probably my most nerve wracking game to date, and just a perfect mix of sliders working to make the game most enjoyable.

Nice work Tank for the slider set, and on we go to game 2 of the first homestand tonight.

My plan is to keep posting my stats/boxscores so people can see the results from these sliders and then i will post my teams stats every so often like after 25 games, 50 games, 81 games, 100 games, etc.
