I was someone who played at high pitch speed for a long time, since the 06 franchise maybe, and while I certainly picked up alot of clues relating to prospective strike/ ball when batting, I recently lowered the pitch speed and am enjoying myself far more.
If you are still having trouble, especially with the nefarious breaking pitch take an entire game to just observe an opposing pitcher without worrying about being an actual batter.
There are lots of subtle clues you will notice as to whether a pitch is a ball or strike. Pay close attention to the moment the pitch leaves his hand. For example in a curve ball, a strike will often rise and complete its apex above the strike zone. It should also be relatively straight meaning facing you and coming towards you relatively head on. If a curveball breaks lower, it will usually land below the knees. One of the easiest to detect is the outside edge curveball, ( or change up and slider) that the AI will bait you with in a 0-2 count. All of them display drastic sideways movement upon release, a surefire clue of a ball. Compare them to breaking pitches for strikes and you will see a clear difference.
Hope that helps.
