    Slider Talk: Crying Foul

    Hi guys.

I've come to the slider gurus here on OS for this one.

Whats the consensus for the foul slider setting?

Does moving it to say, 10, affect balls you hit on the nose, time perfectly or are over the plate?
Or, does it just affect borderline pitches to keep pitch counts in line with the average Johnny Damon?

Also, does the setting make a huge difference based on the Level of difficulty played on? for the most part?

I've seen a lot of conflicting thoughts, as it should be, but was wondering if theres an overruling though out there on what it does and where its set?

    thanks guys.

    Re: Slider Talk: Crying Foul

From what I've observed it has no effects on balls that you hit solidly. If you hit a pitch with authority you will hit it with authority. Like you said, I think it has more to do with fouling off pitches that might have been misses or weak ground balls at lower foul settings. I also haven't noticed any effect on balls down the line for doubles. I have gotten them at an equal rate no matter where I have the foul slider.

I was curious about effects on things like doubles. glad u brought it up.
doubles seem to be eluding me.

            Re: Slider Talk: Crying Foul

Contact, Timing, and opposing Pitch Control all influence what type of (and how many) fouls you'll see.

To answer your question, yes. Balls hit on the nose with a higher fouls slider have a chance (albeit a smaller one) of being popped foul, or driven into the ground foul. (such as in real life.)

If you have any of the reaction hitting sliders (contact and timing) below default, I'd recommend adding one click to fouls for each click you decrease contact.

Foul balls to 10! Holy smokes I had to reduce mine to get the pitch counts down a bit. I was seeing too many fouls (for my taste) on 5 (default).

                How many?

Have you been checking the stats at the end of the game?

but it does depend on the User. On Default, I literally would get 3-5 fouls per game, while the CPU would get anywhere from 20-35 fouls (also on Default).

it would lead to the CPU having far less pitches thrown over the course of the game

I kept raising it after every couple of games until I settled in on 10 for the User (CPU is still default). This has led to the best balance for pitch counts.

And it doesn't lead to more fouls down the line etc. I still hit balls that drop just fair and stuff. When I make solid contact, it's only foul when i'm early or late. It mostly affects the pitches that are borderline swing and misses, it allows you to chip them away and stay alive on the junk balls instead of strike out so easily, which is what the CPU does on Default at an uneven clip compared to the User.

p.s.- average is about 25-28 fouls per team

I had to reduce the CPU's too. I leave mine at default. I didn't check the stats, but it seems like the CPU would have at least one or two at bats where it would get to 3-2 and then they would hit 10 foul balls and turn it into a 15 pitch at bat. I could barely get my starter past 5 innings. I lowered the CPU's to 2 and it seems to help but I still have those at bats against the CPU I can not get them out or to just put it in play. Matter of fact, in my franchise yesterday the CPU's lead off man had a 12 pitch at bat.

Yep, I've placed it at 10 too. I agree, you don't see enough fouls at default. Adds to realism as well. Alot of early and late contact should lead to fouls and don't forget foul variety! There's pulled fouls, tapped fouls, fouls behind the plate, off the umpire (my favorite) and shanked fouls.

Come to think of it, foul variety is greater than hit variety in this game!

Makes for a real life game.

yep, i agree, paris is right, at least for me.

                        10 has worked super nicely.

I'm using psycho's 3.2 sliders but i lowered cpu fouls to 4 (-1). It's helped even up the pitch count between the CPU and I. Before I was getting same thing..(6,7,8 fouls per 1 at bat for the CPU) and my SP's were at like 50 pitches by the 3rd inning.

Ah! I thought you meant for both...I was gonna say the CPU fouls off plenty. I actually lowered CPU to 4 and I am really liking it. THey still foul off plenty of pitches, but I can get good K numbers now.

I might raise mine some though. I whiff a lot, but freely admit my hitting kind of sucks. It would be good to foul off some more borderline pitches to prolong at bats.
