how do you read the player ratings?

I'm just coming over from the Xbox after a three year hiatus from sony. I have MLB the show 11, and much to my dismay, I find it difficult to understand the pitchers ratings. the batting attributes are easy, and fielding is also. but when I see Halladay with 74 for hits and 76 for homers/power, then I'm somewhat confused. wouldn't it seem that the higher the number, the better the attribute? Even Verlander has somewhere in the 70's for hits and 70's for homers. I've been ruined by 2k baseball, so forgive me for not getting this...thanks in advance....!

I don't think the slider subforum is the place to ask these questions... maybe the main or roster forums...

H/9, HR/9, K/9, BB/9 are all better for pitchers when their values are higher.

I wasn't really sure which part of the forum to put it in. I assumed a higher rating would make for a tougher pitcher, but as I said, the top rated pitchers had attributes in the 70's for hits and homers. I guess it's a moot point anyway, because I'm getting the new game in the next few weeks.

Those ratings are based on real-life stats for the most part, so they actually reflect reality. For example, Doc Halladay having H/9 in 70s isn't that questionable, since he's actually quite hittable (i.e., allows many hits) for a pitcher of his caliber. His lifetime H/9 stats IRL is 8.7 H/9. That's about one hit per inning.

actually, I figured people who worked on sliders of sporting games would know how the ratings work, so that's why I posted here. that being said, my question has been answered. the higher the attribute, the more effective that attribute. so a pitcher with 90 as a strikeout rating should have a propensity to strike out many more hitters than a pitcher with a 65 strikeout rating. at least this is my hope....

Yes that's correct about the rating. I was suggesting the other (sub)forums just because more (rating-oriented) people frequent there and you probably receive more responses. Here, it tends to be focused on sliders.

I've found over the years that the sliders people (I'm a novice, myself) tend to know more about this kind of stuff. I play mostly manage only mode or CPU vs CPU. do you know of anyone who will be creating cpu vs cpu sliders for the upcoming game? I usually try default out of the box, but that rarely works. thanks again for the answers.

That might be true about the slider people, but, as you see, until the game gets released the activity level in this subforum is very low but most slider people are hanging around in the main forum, so the chances are higher that you'll get responses there.

As for CPU vs CPU sliders, I think there will be a thread by people who'll be working on it.

Right. Gotcha. I didn't mean to slight them. Your post sounded cryptic, like you weren't joining in again this year. I'm happy that's not the case!

Daiyoung, Ninjoid (if I remember correctly), etc. Great stuff. Here's hoping the team gets reassembled.

I'm possibly going to try my hand at sliders a few days after I get the game, but the show seems to be really good out of the the box...at least compared to 2k baseball. I've always gone the cpu vs cpu route, and one would think this would be a really accurate way to see if the game plays closely to real life. but alas, that's not always the case.

CPU vs. CPU games play very realistically with the Show.

Yea, luckily The Show plays really well in stock format. The difference between a slider being maxed out or zeroed out typically has only slight adjustments, so you'll see plenty of slider threads with people changing things to tweak for their skill level and style (i.e. either Pro with raised sliders, or All-Star with lowered sliders etc.)

I also generally start with CPU vs. CPU for a base line, taking the User out of the equation. I like to get the CPU playing the way I want them first, before throwing myself in the mix.
