Using OOTP historical player ratings with The Show?

OOTP has I think every team in the history of MLB in their game, so I wonder how the player ratings might translate to The Show?

One of the many pains of creating players is rating them, but with that game already having the players rated it might be a good way to go in terms of a community historical roster project. People would only have to create faces, find stances and motions, and yeah it'd still be a lot of work. With ratings theoretically done though, it'd be one step closer.

    Anyone ever looked into this?

I just re-downloaded iOOTP 2011 for iPad, which I never really got into. I did buy one of the historical seasons that year, 1939, and I have to say the ratings look pretty good. For this year's version they are charging $4.99 for the game, and then $0.99 for a season or $19.99 for all season, and then a few other bundled seasons I think.

    Hmmm...

Something to think about I suppose.

Randy, I use Jimbos rating calculator for most of my ratings. Great program that you can use to get ratings for ANY year in baseball. It doesn't have any ratings for defensive categories and it's base running calculations are skewed as well. I use OOTP baseball for those ratings as well as pitch selection and control and movement as well as bunting. Seems to work pretty good. I am making the 75 season right now with these ratings and my results are so far spot on. I created 1984 earlier on before I found OOTP 15 to be so helpful. I am going to re-rate the 84 season after I complete my current project. Hope this provides some insight.

Looks like some of the pitching ratings might not translate too well. I'm looking into it more though.

For hitters you get everything but Clutch and Durability.

Also, in checking out 1939 they have Lefty Gomez throwing 89-90 mph. He was known to have one of the better fastballs of his era. The Neyer/James guide might be a little better there. Plus they have DiMaggio with below average speed, and I guess that may reflect how he played more than anything, because I guess he was known for running hard only when needed. Still, not sure I agree with that rating, as I'm pretty sure he had above average speed.

I think I might just try and create a few players and see how they turn out.

I too use OOTP ratings to recreate historical players. I find that I have to bump first basemen arm strength up by 20 points though. I also take OOTP's speed rating and average it out with what Baseball Cube gives a given player.
          NFL-Oilers. MLB-Expos. NBA-Supersonics. NHL-Whalers.

I don't have OOTP but considering getting it. Are you able to edit the stats so that the attributes goes by it or do you have to edit attributes? If I'm able to input stats for minor leaguers and get attributes into the show then I'd definitely consider using their attributes for my rosters. I do have formulas but if its easier this way and pretty accurate from what I heard, might as well eh.

Re: Using OOTP historical player ratings with The Show?

I have found with many of the historical rosters, the areas needing work or are off a bit are usually fielding related since that info is harder to come by. The scouting report books on the given year have been my favorite so far for fielding, speed, and arm strength/accuracy ratings...for many pitchers it tells you there best pitches and sometimes velocities as well as a whole section that talks of their fielding ability as a pitcher. Each player has a portrait from that year so you can get the look the player may have sported that year right. Got the 87-93 ones for like $3 or $4 a piece on ebay if anyone is interested in picking them up. This weekend I'll be resuming work on 89, focusing primarily on getting all pitchers finished up.

Re: Using OOTP historical player ratings with The Show?

Someone mentioned speed being off. Was looking thru my current Jays roster. Yep quite off. Reyes only had 79 speed, bautista had like 26?! He's got to be in 50-60's at least. Even the hitters doesn't show true attributes for left/right splits. So looks like i'm sticking with my calculator and speed off the baseball cube

Re: Using OOTP historical player ratings with The Show?

Currently I am using OOTP13 for creating the 1969 season. I am getting very close realistic low scoring games with their ratings. The announcers always remark "This game could have been played back in the 70's". Even if you think these ratings are not applicable to MLB14, remember ALL players in the database of the season you created are rated on the same scale. At most you might need to lower or raise your contact or power sliders. I am having great games using ROOKIE for batting & pitching. Using OOTP greatly reduces the time and effort needed to create your own calculators. I do use JIMBOS formulas for the few ratings I can't get from OOTP. Just so you know, I'm a 56 year old Mainframe computer operator who uses spreadsheets on a daily basis. I can really appreciate the work OOTP & JIMBO have done on their spreadsheets.

Re: Using OOTP historical player ratings with The Show?

I agree 100%. I use Jimbos Calc for Power and Contact and a few other ratings then I use OOTP 15 for other ratings. I created my 1975 season using the same calculations and the games come out fine with default sliders. Only thing I noticed was the length of time the starter is left in by the AI in the PS4. Steve Carlton was pitching against me and gave up 9 hits and 4 runs and pitched a complete game with 141 pitches!!! Granted, relievers were not as big a part of the game as they are now, but that seems excessive. I might change the slider that controls the length of time the AI leaves in the starter but outside of that I am pleased with most of the outcomes. FYI, I am 53 and LOVE playing this game and all others concerning baseball. It good to know there are other SEASONED gamers out there. LOL!

Yeah as others have noted, it's good for some things but not all.

The desktop version is on sale now through July 16th, for half off at $19.99 and you get all the historical seasons with that:

It's also available on the Mac App Store.

I am using OOTP V14 ratings (almost solely) for an Early 60s roster project I am currently working on. I have found that they play out very realistically and have decided to stay with this process going forward.

I use OOTP V14 ratings for > 95% of the ratings. I use Jimbo's Calculator for Clutch & Durability (adjust Pitchers Clutch by -30) and I use a formula I created for a Pitchers Movement & Control for each of his pitch types but it is based on the ratings I get from OOTP.

Like tkovacs1 and JohnEKool stated earlier in this thread ..... I am no newbie at this stuff and am a 65 year old former mainframe guy myself!

Try this it likely is the easiest way for you (this is a post jimbo just posted in another thread):

I have been asked a few times if it would be possible to get the historic calculator to work with older versions of Excel, and Open Office etc.

Unfortunately, I haven't worked out a way to do this, so what I have done is saved each individual year into seperate files so that they can be viewed and used using these programs.

You can download all the years from 1950-2010 below (52mb file!!):

Oh and remember, alternative formulas that you can use are in the Calcs tab or you can create your own.

If there are any issues or problems, let me know.
