Is it safe to edit historic roster uni numbers in season?

It's been discussed in another thread that you cannot edit historic roster saves as a stand alone or it will be lost and take you to default roster.
Has anyone tried editing historic roster once you are using it in a season? I just want to fix the non retired jersey numbers. I spent too many hours looking at baseball cards when I was a kid and can't associate players from the 70's with different number.

    Yes you can.
    But...
It is a lot of work.
Some numbers absolutely will not be allowed in certain cases.
Bill Freehan's #11 has been the one number that has been driving me crazy.
I downloaded Hoozierdaddy6's "1967 complete" roster to use it as a base to create a 1968 Detroit Tigers team and play a whole season with the oldies.
The thing is, I soon discovered that upon entering season play, many of the numbers changed. Like you, that ruins it for me, so I had to figure out a way to fix it.

    This is what I did...
The Players are all pretty much numbered correctly on the Roster file. I checked all of the player numbers here:
A 1968 Detroit Tigers roster with with player stats, uniform numbers, salaries, and Opening Day data by Baseball Almanac.

Then the next step was to try and make sure that the Roster, when beginning a season, would force those numbers onto the MLB players when you first start the season.
When the Game wants to number a player automatically, I have found that it always puts the lowest available number on the player. So what I did was make sure that all of the AAA, AA, and A players on the roster had numbers that did not conflict with any of my MLB players numbers.
So I went through all of the "farm system" players on the Tigers Team Roster, all of the "Joe Random's", and gave them all numbers descending from 99, making sure not to repeat any numbers. If I DID have to repeat a number, I made sure that particular conflicting "Joe Random" player was NOT on the "40 Member" roster, and If I could, made sure he was in "A" ball.

After hours and hours of experimentation and editing, I ended up with all of the players numbers on the 67 Tigers MLB squad displaying correctly in "Season Mode" except for 2.
    Hal Newhouser #16
    and
    Bill Freehan #11.

I tried EVERYTHING to get Freehan's number 11 NOT to change to a 12.
I tried shipping him to "A" ball and editing his number to 11 there.
That worked except when I bring him back up to MLB, it reverts back to 12.
I went through and rechecked the entire Tigers Team Roster, all levels and nobody had a number 11 that would conflict with it. Still didn't work.

I have read that someone said that the game won't let you use numbers that the team has already retired.
That hasn't been the reason as far as I can tell because Willy Horton's #23, Charlie Gehringer's #3, etc. have been no issue at all.
I was able to give Horton his correct #23, and I was able to give McAulliffe his #3.

If anyone else has some better ideas, I am all for it. One thing I haven't tried is giving all of the "Joe Random's" unique names.

I tried saving and reloading at various points...Everything I could think of.
Freehan is stuck on "12", and Newhouser is stuck on "19".

SM27, I wonder if your hang up with Freehan's # 11 has to do with current coaching staff uniform numbers? What number is Ausmus?
I noticed in one of my games with the '75' roster that a base coach was wearing a number that was needed for a '75' player.
As long as I can fix most of them, it will be fine.

          Interesting on the coaches thing.

            Nice try, but no Cigar.
No current tigers coaches are number 11.
Ausmus is #7, and that is Jim Northrup's number without issue.
