RBU 15 version 2.0 now available

This is version 2.0 of the RBU utility. I had hoped to get this up sooner but time constraints made this impossible. Changes are as follows:

    * Ratings calculations have been reworked, with special attention given to vision ratings. Simulated strikeout rates should now be closer to those seen in actual history. Thanks to doncropper for calling my attention to this.

    * Defensive ratings are no longer scaled to produce the lower fielding percentages seen historically. There were a number of reasons for this change which I can explain in more detail if anyone is interested.

    * Defensive, Speed, and Bunting ratings were calculated based on lifetime performance and are now written into the seasonal files. There is no need to manually select career ratings for these now. (The option has been removed, anyway.)

    * I removed the option for career ratings due to the fact they are now calculated based on the average seasonal ratings for players and are not scaled to produce standard distributions. They are currently being used for appearance scaling only.

    * Streamlined some functions in the main worksheet. To use only a single year, you need to manually set the percentage for the roster year to 100%.

    * Simplified the player generator. Removed the options to set team strengths and weaknesses as this was not producing the results I was going for. I may revisit this if there is interest.

    * Just for fun, I've included years going back to 1876.

I've been in a bit of a rush to get this done, so there may be some bugs to rework. Please post here if you run across any or have any questions.

Re: RBU 15 version 2.0 now available

    Thanks JTommy,

I am now comparing the differences of RBU V2 to V1 for some of my 1969 Teams I have already built into my WIP Late '60s Roster.

I have 10 Teams built thus far in this Late '60s Roster Set and will Re-Rate with the new RBU V2 if I determine it to be worthwhile from this initial investigation.

I almost hesitate even investigating this due to the fact that I am so very pleased with the over all results produced by RBU V1 which I used for my Early '60s Roster Set and I am now into a Season at the Sept 29th date which has exceptional realistic statistical results with the only possible exception of K's ratios for Pitchers but only during simulations and not necessarily during games played. (Long sentence huh !)

    Thanks Again,
    Don

      JTommy67,

I am in the process of Re-Rating my Rosters with your new RBU15 V2.

When executing the "Run All Macros" everything appears to be OK.

Then when executing the "Write to Team Pages" after a minute or so of execution I receive an error message as follows:

      Microsoft Visual Basic
      Run-time error '9'
      Subscript out of range

It appears to write all the MLB players to the Team Pages OK along with an occasional 1 or 2 other players that have the "*" at the end of their names but does not fill the Team Pages with all the other lower level players as RBU V1 did.

All Players seem to be available in the Players Tab but again only the MLB and occasionally a couple to few non MLB "*" players are in the Team Tabs and even the "*" players in the Team Tabs are noted as MLB Players.

This doesn't make using the RBU15 V2 unusable for me but I just wanted let you know of this error.

      Thanks,
      Don

*** It works totally OK for a 1930, 1962 & 2012 rosters but fails as noted above for 1960, 1963, 1964 & 1969 rosters as those are the only ones I tested.

Re: RBU 15 version 2.0 now available

        What is happening is this:

For players who didn't appear in the majors that year, I wrote into the data file (vitals page) the team they made their next MLB appearance with. This works fine unless the franchise switched names/locations which means that the utility is looking to match him up with a team, can't find it, and puts a "-" in for his team, then the roster utility can't put him on a team page and throws an error.

For example, Joe Altobelli didn't play in 1960 but made his next appearance with the Twins in 1961 (MIN), so it can't match him up with a team in 1960 since the Twins were actually the Senators (WSH).

Until I can fix this here's a workaround:

        1) Open the RBU main utility file.

        2) Go to the 'Main' worksheet.

        3) Change the formula in cell J18 so it looks like this:

        =IFERROR(IF(Settings!$AW$3=1, Main!AG79, Main!AG80), "FA")

(You're changing the "-" to "FA")

What it will do now is, if it can't match a player up with a team it will make him a FA. When you write to team pages, you'll then have to check the FA screen and if you see any players with an asterisk you'll have to look them up. Not a perfect solution but it will allow you to use the team pages until I get this fixed.

        Thanks for pointing this out!

        JTommy

            JTommy,

Before I go much further with these Re-Rates I just wanted to check with you on the following:

*** Large number of Pitchers have ratings of 3 & 1 for Bunting & Drag Bunting.
Looks like it might be all pitchers that have a solid number of appearances have these 3 & 1 ratings and the ones that don't have solid number of appearances have ratings for these two categories which are in line with RBU V1's.

This is significantly different than was RBU V1 thus I would like to know if this is as it was designed to be.

            Thanks,
            Don

Actually, all the pitchers have incorrect bunt & drag bunt ratings. I'm on this and will upload a fix probably no later than Saturday, hopefully sooner.

EDIT: Actually, there's a chance I could have this done by this evening.

You can download this file which contains a new data folder. Just replace your old one with the new one and run as normal.

The bunting/drag bunting ratings are corrected. You may also notice some adjusted power ratings due to a small error I found in the calculations. However, it probably won't make much difference for most players.

I will update the main download link after I've made a final fix for the issue originally described in this thread.
