Yeah....this is all so very true. I'm still learning the quirks of the players on my team. In my Braves chise, I was about to try to trade-off my RF Lee due to the contract and his utter lack of durability (necessitating a rest day every 3rd day). Then, realized he's a 27 or 28 yr old rookie...then the storyline made sense...he's an import from the KBO. It changed my tune on him just because it's a fun story.
There are guys with big pop that are extreme push hitters (Shaw from Miami is one); there are low pop guys that are pull hitters. You have to not only understand the ratings, but how to use them. You have to look at the hot/cold zones, the player quirks, etc. Factor-in morale, contract statuses, and so on and there is a lot to digest.
When I first started to try to pick a team, I was looking very surface level (like I might for a "real life" roster). I spun my wheels trying to figure it out. Once I dug a bit deeper at player ages, contracts and so on, I began to get a little better feel and the Braves stood out to me as a fascinating squad (older team, crap farm, but with potential).
You begin to appreciate the brilliance of the franchise mode when you use a roster like this...
