    OS98 For MLB 19*- A Spreadsheet Preview

    Hello all, happy holidays!

So, after two years working on Fire Pro World content, I'm back here, and I'll be doing a brand new set for MLB 19. I'll cover 1998, from scratch.

I want this to be my best work in 20 years of doing data work, I'm leaving no rock unturned in terms of research.

I want all the details in there and accurate: Place Of Births, Service Time (see below), Options, Hitting Tendencies, Contract Term, Contract Money (again, see below)

In OS94, the players that DID have appropriate custom service time (that is all the fielders, pitchers were done very early with a limited number of generics, their YOS wasn't so accurate) had service time rounded up to the closest year. In OS98, they will be rounded up to the closest half year, if within the first 6 years of their career. That means that instead of having 0-1-2-3-4-5-6 for YOS, players will have 0-0.5-1-1.5-2-2.5 etc up to 6, which will again be given to any player that has enough years to hit free agency. This will make roster management more realistic. This research is ongoing.

Every player will have their accurate number of options, again, making roster management more realistic, no more hiding veterans in the minors. This research is also ongoing.

Those into researching this stuff probably noticed that FOX Sports pulled their old MLB profiles off their site, meaning that I had to rummage through old newspapers (Mainly the Hartford Courant, for whatever reason) to find contract info, well I did that. That research is done, I'm just adding new ones when I add players.

Money figures are modernized but balanced.

So, set details, this will be a 90-Man set, Full MLB meaning every player that was in MLB in 1998 will be in, as well as every player that had been or will be in MLB that was in the minors at the time will be.

Full Free Agency... since I don't have expansion teams to fill this time, this will be a lot less work.

This will tentatively have extended prospect pools, meaning all future prospects that would be old enough to play in 1998 will be in but if Sony implements editable draft classes, it will be my pleasure to pull these and put career minor leaguers instead. Also, possibility I just go full minor leaguers and offer a spreadsheet for people to edit in the drafted players after the draft? I've thought of many ways how it would work...

This is a copy of one sheet in my spreadsheet. I've got lots more done, but this I feel really shows a lot of the research I've done. I'll update it every time I work on it.

Hey, I hope it lives up to the hype!

I considered not posting a hype thread, only post it when it was done, but I can't help myself, love me some hype.

Love the hype and having a great season like '98 (McGwire & Sosa chasing the ghost of Maris, Yankees 114 wins) to look forward to. That said, absolutely no rush on these, its a labour of love that, while it involves a tonne of tedious, should be enjoyed by the creator in giving his world life, and in a sense, reliving that year during the process. So absolutely no hurry and enjoy ''putting the puzzle'' together.

Anywho, my main reason for posting is one of the little things that always intrigues me about recreating any given year is the free agent list. '98 is no exception and hoping to see guys like Fernando Valenzuela, Brett Butler and Tony Péna. But what about HoF'ers like Ryne Sandberg, Lee Smith & Eddie Murray, what are the chances we see them again too? Again, thanks and I cant stress enough, no hurry.

          Phil:

You need career stats as well.
          I have 3-teams completed with stats, based on Baumy's 1998, 50-Man.
Once I finish roster file in MLB 18, we could port over the stats guys to MLB 19.
That would complete your mission, so to speak.

I gets stats 85-90% accurate, via simming.
For Batters: Hits is main stat.
          For Starting Pitchers: Wins.
          For Closers: Saves.
For Relief Pitchers: Guys with 300 + IP as of end 1997 ...... And young guys/prospects with Potential of 500 + Career IP.

I want to help you with your project, as you know how frustrating OS94 was, going @ that mission solo. Let us work together, and I will follow your lead. I suggest using Baumy's 1998, 50-Man set. I am carrying that over to MLB 18. Appropriate players will have stats, and proper 3-A players will be there. So at least half the work will be done and roster than easily be ported. Service will be close to good.

Any ways, just wanted to share.

          Thx

Baumy's work is always great, but if I use his set as a base then both our sets would be pretty much the same.

Career Stats would be great, esthetically and for the HOF too, but I want to focus on having more accurate YOS and Options so that season mode / roster management is better. In my mind it would be near impossible to line up accurate career stats along with correct YOS and Options. I do want to have an HOF-level generic to use for players who are later in their career in 1998 and would eventually be in the HOF, though.

If we could input career totals manually, I would 100% do it.

I don't know, we're many months away from input into 19 anyways.

My sims were pretty strong in OS94 too. I'll use the same calculator. All that work is done by the way, the ratings. I just didn't share the sheet yet because the rest is actually the stuff that usually isn't in most sets (YOS, Options, weighted salaries, etc...) and I want to show it.

Ok, I will keep at my project.
I get stats + years of service almost exact.
It is not hard, just takes some time
              to accomplish.

I just wish that you, or someone, will do player faces for this great project when complete. 1994 always felt incomplete, at least in the version I had, with player appearances being mostly generic. If anyone has any alternate version please let me know

Always depends 1) How many free agent slots I got to fill and 2) What the free agent pool looks like.

In OS94, I had no problem adding a bunch of retired players, even some guys that had retired a year earlier (Like Gary Carter) because on top of the actual free agents pool, I had 180 slots to fill on Tampa and Arizona. Without the retired guys and the international free agents, the actual free agent pool would have been really bare.

In OS98, Tampa & Arizona are around, no need to fill those slots. So I only have the Free Agents pool to fill. I always go for active players first. But if I look at the pool and it's really bottom heavy and it might need some more talent up top, I will absolutely look at old guys that can still go.

About Sandberg, Eddie & Lee Smith... I saw Lee Smith's 1997 season, wasn't pretty in a limited role, I think he'd be done. Eddie batted .222 as a part-time DH... done. But... Sandberg still batted .280+... could be good for one more year!

yeah Smith tried to catch on with KC in '98 but couldnt even crack a spot on the staff of a bad (72-89) Royals team, though he did find a a temporary home in Houstons organisation. Thanks again and appreciate your time.
