    Project Baseball

    Where to begin...

Alright, so here's the deal guys - About a year ago I contacted a regional company that would be able to do things like this and spoke to them about the possibility of "enhancing" The Show. I might have brought it up a while ago, but it's time for an update.

So long story short, the guy was incredibly cool, interested, and sympathetic to the cause. He was a baseball fan and gentleman in his 50's. He said he would check more with his employees to see who/how many would be willing to do it off the clock for whatever fee we agree upon. The point is, he doesn't doubt we can modify MLB The Show in the ways I described.

For example, have you guys seen what they did to Madden 19 on PC? Or what can be done to NBA 2K, or really the Godfather of them all - The NCAA 14 Remake?

It may seem impossible now, or far away, but I'm telling you with every bit of confidence that in our lifetime, and sooner rather than later, we are going to have a version of The Show 20 on PC that is going to rock the world of any baseball gaming fan, mostly the retro crowd. Also, let it be known that PS4 emulators are available and have been for at least a year. Also, The Show 20 is available for immediate PC use.

Let me tell you what this all means and what I'm rambling about.

    Past PC Remakes

You guys are smart, you should be able to pick up what I'm putting down and getting at here. In 2018, when Madden came to PC, people created mods that turned the fake ads into Budweiser and other taboo ads that added an incredible sense of realism and immersion to the setting (think Marlboro ads in 1987 Yankee Stadium) among other incredible feats. These cats were able to modify uniforms in Photoshop and make whatever they wanted, and make it look good, but the game changer was how they could modify stadiums. They could change the field of course, but they could also add and remove parts of the stadium if I remember correctly, or at least remove them. This will be relevant later. On top of ALL THIS, someone made something called the "Nectar Mod" that took Madden, yes Madden, and made it play incredible. It changed everything from ball trajectories to receive routes and tackles. Brand new game, how it should be.

For those of you who have seen the NCAA 14 Remake, you already know this. That group released an entire remake of a game with every mod I just listed and released it as a whole new package. It is so well done, so good, and so much fun that it made the best college football game of all time twice as good in every category.

Why this is important for MLB 20

For people who love retro baseball, this could change everything. I am not very educated or understanding of how this works, but it does. That's why I need your help to create this for everyone to honor the game of baseball as it should be, and as we know it. No one is taking this from us, so get ready.

    Uniforms

The bottom line is this - We will be able to create either in game (DD creator) or from Photoshop whatever uniforms we want to have. It's possible we can have every throwback, or close to, for every team. Use your imagination, the sky here is the limit.

    Stadiums

Knowing how The Show 21 and its stadium creator feature work, it helps me understand that their ballparks are modeled on individual parts/components/items etc... This is how the guys from the Madden Mod were likely able to remove things from stadiums. So for those of us who miss old Wrigley, we should be able to remove those scoreboards and extra rows to see the tops of the buildings again and increase the nostalgia factor. We will likely also be able to interchange scoreboards and remove some of the monstrosities from places like Cleveland where it is 7 miles wide! If this logic holds up, and the past can be replicated, then what is stopping talented people from remaking, or at least coming close to, older stadiums we want? I would be okay with them copying Tropicana Field and adding in some seats or bleachers copied elsewhere to remake a little Kingdome or Astrodome backdrop, wouldn't you? Metrodome maybe? Anyway, again, use your imagination.

    Gameplay

MLB The Show 20 is the best playing baseball game of all time and always will. Period. Whatever little few bugs or quirks it has will be ironed out and God only knows what people can do with animations (like in the football games) and physics, should they even need to. There will also be an option to toggle the DH so Milwaukee and Houston can be properly used in Exhibition.

    Graphics

Yeah, so go look at what they did to NCAA 14. Go play it if you can. MLB 20 already looks great, especially on PS5 in 4k. Now imagine what another coat of paint is going to do to that. What if people can make face scans or something of that sort? Even if not, who cares. Imagine how this will pop.

    Equipment

This is where it really can get good. Imagine Barry Bonds having his earring. What about Frank Thomas wearing his Reebok cleats with the touch of red in them? Either we will be able to port older equipment over (like the good Nikes from 2018 and the original, good Franklin Classics from 2018 as well as the Louisville Slugger from 18) or just create our own in Photoshop. Batting gloves, cleats, turtlenecks with the Nike logo, etc... True authenticity can be achieved with this addition.

    Rosters

Don't quote me on this guys, but I am willing to be the existing save files to MLB 20 could easily be transferred over to PC, keeping intact all of the work people have poured into this game and will continue to. I personally would recreate all 10 of mine again for this anyway, but I'm thinking we shouldn't have to.

    Timeline

Right now I just want your guy's opinions. I have zero idea how to do any of this myself, but I'm motivated and passionate about this so I'm willing to put some time and other resources in. Does anyone know how to do any of this how we could do any of this, or who to ask before getting companies involved for money? The other projects were either done individually or as a team, but that's what I would like to get fleshed out. This is a community project for the benefit of all, I just want to get the ball rolling and share my vision for it. Please, give me feedback and add whatever you can if this interests you. It will be the last good thing to happen to baseball until Manfred goes to Guantanamo.

EDIT: There really is no timeline for this by the way, it may even take two years or so for technology or the quality of emulators to pick up for this to be possible. I don't know. But we should start making a plan anyway guys, I want this and I know it can be done.

I will contribute any way I can, time or $$$

A roster editor alone would change MLBtS infinitely for the better. I can't even guess how many hours I've wasted.... editing 1000s of players 1-at-a-time.... Someone should have just put me out of my misery.. I can literally build the core of a Madden roster in an hour, with csv dumps off PFR.

I was looking at the Switch, and the Homebrew Apps out there so far. I thought that might be the gateway to kick this door down. But PC/emulator would be even better.

Slapping homers with Junior over the rightfield Kingdome wall is pretty much my (baseball) w@t dream. This would be simply awesome.

... interesting reading on the emulators. PCSX4 sounds like the scam to end all scams. Spine is Linux only. Orbital isn't running commercial games so far, and may not even run them at all? Tough sledding.

For whatever it is worth; lorak has already cracked the PS3 rosters. I doubt highly the structure has changed much since 2016.

Imported, accurate career stats would be huge. Like roster editing, simple, once the fields are defined.

It would be fascinating to see what could be done with scheduling (no inter-League)

Based on Madden modding, I doubt we could do much with the expansion teams or playoff format.

For PS3 emulation, it is literally just a matter of removing 2 folders out of the save.

With utilities like the Save Wizard already having decrypted PS4 files, I highly doubt this will be much of a hurdle.

Man, it sounds like you know a lot more about the technical aspect of this than I do, and I know you love the games and retro feels as much as I do, so glad to have you aboard! Right now I think we just need to start doing exactly what we are - Talking, planning, getting ideas and a realistic sense of what to expect. The tech may have to catch up some, or be good enough already, I don't know but we will find out. The beauty of this is there is no rush, and the past is the past so we have all the time in the world to get it right. If this would be complete in 3-4 years from now I would be happy. MLB 20 will hold us over just fine until then and guys are creating a literal encyclopedia of classic rosters to the point we may have like around 70-80% of the seasons from 1900-2000+ by the time things are fleshed out. I do agree an emulator is the way to go. I was attempting to do this on console before when I contacted the company but a guy I've talked to since (not a professional though) said an emulator is the way to go as well.

Perfect. So when the PS4 is more accessible it will hopefully be as we're expecting. Awesome, awesome news man, thank you. Career stats would be mouth watering, absolutely no doubt. I bet we could create schedules modeled after every year played in the majors. Why couldn't someone? If we can change stadium parts, overwrite files, etc... we can surely create a custom schedule, no? And what about games with different overlays? I see a lot with FOX or NBC and what not being created for the other games. I don't know about you, but I want my Cubbies games on WGN with some blue roofs in the background!

I've used pretty much every utility the Football Freaks/Football Idiot guys have created. I'll put in the sweat and tears (data entry/porting) Just don't have the skills those guys have. Wish beyond belief I put more time into coding than gaming as a teen.. but that ship sailed a long time ago.

I do worry a little about going about this via emulation. I had some random crashing with RPCS3. And some not-so-random crashing, trial and error with my roster files and playbooks.

It would be best if SDS just gave us a PC version. As with Madden, you're pretty much just layering over something already in place. And most everything has a hard, set threshold that shouldn't/can't be crossed.

I do think I am going to pick up a Switch. I feel like that is the easiest way to get a look behind the curtain right now.

... the beauty of creating rosters, once we have an editor; the RBU has pretty much done the work for us. Entire seasons can be dumped, year by year. What is that utility up to? 120 seasons? Just insane to comprehend!

Even for those that don't want to use that rating scale, all the data can be edited via a spreadsheet and re-imported.

Stats entry could be grueling, but would be totally worth it. Definitely will have to tag team that.

Yeah I feel you on the coding.

You're right though, I forgot about the emulators crashing or freezing at certain points. That could be an issue if it happened often enough or hindered the ability to finish games or make edits. That's why I'm not sweating the time frame.

If you do get a Switch and find really anything interesting out, please of course let us know. That sounds like it could be a good start or at least give you more of an idea what we're working with.

But yeah, honestly the data entry should be the least of our worries from the sound of it. Grinding hours to import ratings and stats will be a picnic for the community if all of this is created. I also have no experience how the roster tool works, but man.... You make it sound like a Christmas present lol. We'll get this figured out though, as I imagine our support will only grow as you can see the frustration spread through a lot of baseball fans already.

I had a (major!) freeze issue with M12. I couldn't exit out of games half the time. Kinda soul crushing if you had a great game.

I was never able to isolate what caused it. 08 PC wouldn't even enter a game if something was wonky.

The principles are all the same though. If mods/edits work on PS3, there is no reason they wouldn't work on an emulator. Not trying to be discouraging at all. But we'd definitely be best off if SDS just released a PC version.

.. Switch could solve the roster problem in short order. Granted, toying with a hex editor won't be fun and games. I cringe at the thought. But anything created or edited could just be posted to the Vault for all platforms. Thats for 22 though. That would not preserve the work done on other versions, which needs to happen, as you said!

It is extremely soul crushing. I was always plagued by that post game replay freeze in Dynasty for NCAA 14 on PS3, and a lot of great games were lost due to the replay freeze come end of game. It has made me end seasons before.

I agree that it would be best for a PC release, let's just hope for that maybe, no? Armor says they are nailing gameplay so that's good. Even if they keep removing uniforms and equipment it won't matter if a PC release comes out I suppose.

Regardless, we know the rosters should remain useful so either way things good for the future of baseball gaming, one way or another.

God, I LOVED that game - MVP 2005. Plenty of great seasons were featured there and I played many of them.
Pitching, defense and 2 out RBIs win a lot of ball games!

                          Re: Project Baseball

Guys, this is still early and information is scarce, but I had to come here immediately and let you know that it is possible.

I joined a discord server that does these sorts of things and yes, it is possible. Right now I only asked about uniforms, but with enough work and commitment we could do it. That means we could port over jerseys from past games and most likely from new ones. So the jerseys added to 21 could be ported and those from past versions, like Cleveland's could be as well. Even those from 19 could be ported so we don't have the Nike swoosh on the front of jerseys and then we also could get back the nice CWS away pants.

I have no other information at the moment, nor any idea how to do it, BUT.... it is possible guys. This would have to be a community effort to the max, and it might be years until something happens, but it is possible. I repeat, we can make this happen. It will be costly and likely require a PS4 Pro that we need to *mod*, but it can be done.

More updates will follow as I learn more, but I will need help to decipher and make sense of what I find out. Anyway, I had to share this. We're going to make this happen guys. I'll do whatever I can in the process, but I need your help. We're going to do this for everyone, this can be special.

Edit: I should probably note this would be for console, and not PC emulation, which is probably better for stability anyway. Some of the previous ideas may or may not be possible on console, but who knows. Simply having all of the past and post-20 released uniforms will be enough for me to pursue this alone. And guys, don't forget about past equipment as well. All those old batting and fielding gloves, cleats, etc... would likely all be back in play as well. I can not hide my excitement. Hello Marlins teal, hello Padres blues, hello Cuba jerseys, hello baseball, welcome back.

Yeah, I'm thinking that is our best bet, but, and I could be wrong, but I think there may even be a PS5 jailbreak so I don't know yet for sure. Good news is I have some directions to follow thanks to a very, very helpful member. This is what he said verbatim:

"First thing you need to do is research the format
See if it is compatible with the other version of the game at all
Or maybe some other modders have already researched it and created tools for it. Xentax and zenhax forums are great for stuff like this".

That's where we stand now. Every journey begins with a step and we just took a few.
