Doesn't have to happen on a pickoff, it's just a catch-all term for a fielder deceiving the runner into thinking he doesn't have the ball.
I haven't seen it myself in a long time, but it's been in the game for about as long as The Show has had its presentation cutscenes (07-08 or so).
I'm pretty sure you can't actually get called out in the game though - it's a "fluff" scene. (there'd be no end to the complaints if someone lost an online game or vs the CPU to this)

Ya, it was pretty cool. Ramirez was on third (I was the Indians) andd they showed a cut scene of the 3B talking to the pitcher and then him walking back overr to third. Ramirez was talking to the 3B coach and then suddenly jumps back on the bag. I would of laughed if he got caught. But I know what you mean about the complaints. Ive played over 100 games and never saw it. It was nice, even if it was "fluff"Really wish sports games played to ratings!
