    Pitch control vs pitch consistency.

I've played The Show religiously since MLB 08 and I feel like I have a pretty good grasp on what each slider does. However these two mentioned in the topic have always been a bit of a mystery to me as to what exactly they do. I've read the in-game description of them obviously, but I'm curious if you guys think the same way I do.

I believe that pitch control is essentially how often you miss your spot while pitch consistency is essentially when you do miss your spot, how bad is it. Agree or disagree? This is just my take from playing the game for years.

The reason I ask is that the one area where I consistently fall short in producing a realistic game of virtual baseball is my lack of issuing walks.

I try to pitch to the corners but still I might issue one or maybe two walks at most a game. And it's rarely, if ever not on a full count. No four-pitch walks, really ever.

Re: Pitch control vs pitch consistency.

Good stuff here. Important to think about. I pitch with HP Control and Consistency at Zero, which makes it very difficult to throw strikes at times, but still doesn’t lead to that many walks given that you know when to pitch in. I find that this is the best option. I would suggest significantly lowering CPU contact and timing to compensate for doing this. My slider set is an interesting one that I may or may not release to the Vault, I have been getting some pretty realistic results from them so far with lots of surprises as well. Fun set.

Agreed. I also pitch with both sliders at zero. Did last year too. I would take his advice and lower CPU contact etc, but not too much or you'll still never walk anybody. Take it down to level that's comfortable then bump it up a notch to where you aren't super comfortable. That way you're not throwing to the corners to generate walks, but to avoid getting crushed, and the walks should follow.

Make the CPU somewhat tough to where you're even trying to get hitters to chase out of the zone on full counts. Also pitch around the Elite hitters when you can, if you walk them you walk them. In the MLB only approximately 44% of pitches are in the strike zone. (That's not strike percentage. That's actually pitches in the zone). There is a reason for that. They respect hitters. If your sliders dont make you respect hitters then you'll rarely generate walks.

Interesting you also could turn the vibrate in the strike zone off. No visual aids and no vibrate make a difference as well

Have you considered approaching this from a different angle? In Franchise mode you can just edit (lower) the control rating of each pitch for any pitcher that you use. I know this works because I am using a Fictional Roster that includes pitch edits with lower pitch control ratings and have no trouble issuing walks with Default sliders.

I have a roughly similar (though it's more "how much" than "how often" with Pitcher Control) understanding of how Pitcher Control/Consistency sliders work, but for the lack of walks (which has always been an issue with the game), one big piece that needs to be considered is that the game (as per the AI programmer) is designed to produce walks when you/CPU try to pitch around hitters.

There are walks that happen due to lack of control/command of pitchers, and there are walks that happen when pitchers deliberately avoid fat parts of the strike zone.

The mechanism that The Show employs heavily favor the latter (because the pitchers in the game are more accurate and less wild than the real-life counterparts), so you have to tune the game to "boost" your opponent's hitters enough so that you have second thoughts about simply throwing strikes to hitters, at least the ones who hit in the middle of the lineup.

So that's something you could try if you are still now walking even after setting Pitcher Control/Consistency to zero (i.e., pitchers are the wildest the game allows).

sorry for the bump but I could do with a little more explaining the difference in the Pitch Control and Pitch Consistency sliders. In my simple thinking, I cant separate that they do 2 different things, even as I know that they do. Also, talk to me like I'm not smarter than a 5th grader

The way I understand it is that control is how often you miss your spot and consistency is how bad you miss when you do.

The Kershaw reference has always made this quote from Bobheads Last Gen Slider Explanation Thread stick in my brain. The info is now 7 years old but in my opinion it’s very comprehensive and still relevant. The whole post is a great read.

                  https://forums.operationsports.com/f...y-sliders.html

“------- Pitcher Control: Affects the "sharpness" of pitches. This slider affects a pitcher's effectiveness, the effectiveness of their pitches (ie: whiff rate), and a pitcher's ability to paint the corners/edges of the strike zone. Directly affects ball-to-strike ratios, as well as walk-to-out ratios. Directly affects the opposing batter's ability to make contact on a pitch, as well as the level of contact made.

Increasing ONLY this slider will reduce walks, pitch counts, and opposing batting averages. Increasing ONLY this slider will slightly increase strikeouts. If a pitcher is hitting their spots on the black too frequently, or not able to paint the corners enough; or if a pitcher is just dominating hitters too much, regardless of pitch location, this is the option to change.

This slider also affects the opponent's (moreso CPU ones) likeliness of chasing a pitch. Increasing the Human Pitch Control slider will increase the number of chases by the CPU

------- Pitcher Consistency: Affects the "success rate" of a pitch, regardless of location, IE: a pitcher's overall effectiveness. DOES affect accuracy, but this slider works very differently from Pitch Control (see below). This slider affects the frequency of a "failed" pitch. Such a failed pitch has a good chance of missing far from its intended location, and/or being hit well by the opposing batter.

This slider also affect's a pitcher's confidence, and that confidence's stability (ie how long it takes to lose your "groove"). In a nutshell, this slider affects the frequency of "bad" innings and "bad" games.

Increasing ONLY this slider will make pitchers less hittable overall (fewer mistake pitches), thus reducing opposing batting averages, and slightly increasing strikeouts. Increasing ONLY this slider will slightly increase the frequency of "special" performances by a pitcher, ie: no-hitters, shutouts, complete games etc... Increasing ONLY this slider will decrease walks and opponent run differentials. It will increase a pitcher's ability to perform in critical situations, thus reducing opposing averages with runners in scoring position. If your pitchers (especially relief pitchers), are not performing at the desired level, this is the option to change. If you aren't seeing enough offensive rallies, or pitchers are just too dominant, this is the option to change.

If you are still hazy on the difference between the two pitcher sliders, consider this: Lowering Pitch Control will turn Clayton Kershaw into tired-looking Clayton Kershaw. Pitch Control affects the distance offset with which a pitch can miss.

Lowering Pitch Consistency will turn Clayton Kershaw into a complete scrub. It affects a pitcher's ability in terms of pitch execution. A lower pitch consistency will lead to a higher number of pitches that significantly miss their location. The game description is pretty spot-on, this slider affects wild pitches and all of that stuff, too.

In summary, Pitch Consistency basically affects how frequently a pitch misses its target, while Pitch Control affects the average distance by which a pitch will miss. In basketball terms, Pitch Consistency affects your shooting percentage, while Pitch Control affects whether a shot goes right in, or bounces a little on the rim first. Some of those shots might even roll right out of the rim”

I use classic on Legend on 7 control 6 consistency. I’ve been messing with both sliders and still walk quite a few per game. So I really don’t know [emoji24]

I like it, I had a bad few games with control issues but clevinger got the pitching back on track with 6IP 9Ks 1H and 1 walk. Surprisingly my bullpen has also been lights out.
