Is stealing bases utterly random?
Seems like stolen base logic needs completely rewritten. Highly rated base stealers getting terrible jumps, pick offs and psychic pitch out calls make this part of the almost unusable.

Re: Is stealing bases utterly random?
The highly rated basestealers getting terrible jumps is a function of the pitcher as well as the runner. Pitchers have a hidden attribute (probably associated with animation or perks) that judges how deceptive their pickoff move is. Runners will get consistently bad jumps on high deception pitchers, even if their basestealing ability is high.
Rarely get an extra step to lead, it's often not worth the risk. High basestealing ability runners have a better chance to make it back to the bag in the case of a pickoff, but again that is countered by the pitchers deception rating, which is hidden to the player.
The rest is bad luck/in your head. I've yet to have the CPU correctly guess when I'm stealing and pitch out in 19, and they have certainly tried. Every time they pitch out, I'm standing calmly at first.

I believe you can manually control the jump by pressing and holding L2 before the pitcher sets themselves, and then releasing when you want to jump.Comment

Agree. Especially the pick off and pitch outs. Two times i tried to set a steal for hit and run with a slow runner, didn't increase my lead or anything, throws over twice, i don't push L2 and they pitch to home. I steal next pitch and it's a pitchout. Absurd.

Re: Is stealing bases utterly random?
Yes...I tested this extensively last year and there is some sort of ESP going on regarding pickoff attempts and steals. I would call a steal with a slow runner and sure enough there would be a pick off attempt. I would not increase the lead or indicate in any way through patterns of behavior or game situations. Same thing with pitchouts. They just seemed to "know" the majority of the time.
Tried various scenarios with different speeds of runners and yes, there is something odd going on that they should look into and/or tone down.

Re: Is stealing bases utterly random?
On top of that, Hit and runs should be used more often in counts where the pitcher is most likely to throw a pitch for a strike, so the hitter can make contact. First pitch hit and runs, or behind 0-1 or 0-2 are not advisable counts to go on. They can afford a pitchout here.
(On the other hand, it's more of a chess match here on a Straight Steal on these counts with a decent runner. While "offspeed" counts can be good to straight steal on, they are not good for Hit & Runs. Especially since the game is a bit pitchout happy.)
Tap L2 to steal, and then Hold L1 through the pitch. It's a little known method but has helped my success rate go up to a realistic level. You don't need to have an extra lead. I basically never get an extra lead. (Extra leads are taken when you release L1. Just don't release it.)Comment

Re: Is stealing bases utterly random?
One thing that I forgot to mention earlier is I noticed that the CPU does seem to predict steals if you call for a steal after the pitcher sets.
The way I see it, the tapping L2 method is like a manager sending a signal to steal, while the hold L2 and release method is you taking direct control of the runner.
If you mix your steal signal in with all the other signals before the play starts, CPU cannot predict. However, if late into a play a random signal comes from the third base coach, a team is going to catch on.
If you decide to steal after the pitcher is set, you need to take manual control. I'm not sure if this was done intentionally but I like it. I just forgot about it because it's been in the game a few years and I always make my decision before the pitcher is set now out of habit.

Re: Is stealing bases utterly random?
My views and thoughts so far...
Highly skilled runners do get back on pickoffs.
I dont really have an issue with pickoffs except I believe I play with it on default amount (5) and they play like it used to on slider setting of like (7)
I havent been picked off by the CPU in 19.
However the hold and release method (L2) : I think its flawed. Delayed. I let go much earlier and it wants to hang and then say he is stealing. And I've always thought baserunners are too fast in the series. But now I think players that steal are in quick sand.
Guys like Mallex Smith, Dee Gordon, others just got torched on steals one was just so badly not close. I'll continue to practice it but it does seem kinda crappy.
I havent dealt with the pitch stuff. I can pretty much tell whe. They are itching to do so... cat n mouse

Is stealing bases utterly random?
The lead off logic on auto base running isn’t right to me. I’m playing as the Braves @ Rockies, bottom of the 9th I’m down 6-3. I get it back to 6-5, two out and Ender Inciarte singles to right. I’m thinking ok I have a chance still. Markakis steps in and without me manually increasing his lead, Inciarte gets picked off for the final out! Surely with two out you wouldn’t be trying to steal you’d be hoping the batter at the plate would put the ball in play first? I’m British and therefore my understanding of your sport may be a little lacking but that doesn’t make sense to me.

I usually use auto base running what really pisses me off with this is the CPU makes the choice to steal whenever they want and waste a out. and they run on wild pitches EVERY FRIGGIN TIME!! and sometimes they get caught running on a wild pitch when any man and his dog can see if you run you will get picked off at 2nd or 3rd.
the old games you could make the choices with auto running on. I hate it. I want auto base running but I want to make the choice if I steal or not or move the runners on a WP.Comment

so John Lester and Dellin Betances would be easy to steal from?

Re: Is stealing bases utterly random?
Just use default base running with sliding assist and those issues go away. You control when runners advance and when you may have to send them back because you feel it might be a bad decision to advance them. Yes at first it is confusing but once you get the hang of it it becomes second nature and you wont lose games because of bad base running logic . When I hit a ball in the gap I immediately move the left stick towards the runner on their way to first and press the triangle button to send him to second before he even reaches first. If I see the fielder bobble or I feel like I can take third I press the left stick up towards the runner going to second and then press the square button to send him to third. I am sure you guys know all of this as many of you are seasoned players but this is really to way to go for me at least
I can't manually control base running I have tried before I suck at it. I hit the wrong buttons and I end up even sometimes getting tipple played. I just can't do it. I like it with Auto and all i have to do is Hit L1 if I feel all runners need to advance.
I just wish it could be said to auto and you control when to steal and when to move from a WP. I had a issue last night where a wild pitch happened and Votto decided to take off and get caught halfway to 2nd base. because the dumb CPU decided to run off a wild pitch the catcher had stopped.Comment

Re: Is stealing bases utterly random?
Does the stealing slider affect both human and cpu? I want to make it so that I can get a realistic rate, but seems CPU always steals on me with default slider already.
Maybe i need tips on throwing out runners =p there isn't a tutorial mode on this stuff, is there? I know I've seen hitting and fielding, but not baserunning or throwing out runners.Comment
