Re: Mike Lowe MLB The Show 20 Sliders

I like that you're using actual statistics to try and create these sliders.

Just a word of advice on two things you listed.

The 60% first pitch strike and about 60% ball strike ratio

Be careful with those two. Those percentages dont mean that the pitcher is throwing 60% of his pitches in the strike zone. Strike can come from a foul ball or swing and miss (obviously). But those two outcomes can come from pitches thrown outside the strike zone.

Most of the pitches pitchers throw are actually outside the zone. Only about 40% of pitches are thrown in the strike zone.

Here's the data i found. I know its its from 2014. But i compared it to pitches thrown and swing percentage in 2019 and it still holds true.

Hitters have been told since they began playing Little League not to swing at pitches outside the strike zone. How well do they listen to this sage advice, and should they?

In MLB the show, pitchers throw in the zone way too much. Because of this virus thing, i sat and charted pitches for a few games. On hall of fame default settings. 60-70% of pitches were being thrown in the strike zone. Which is way too high in comparison to MLB stats, but makes sense for a video game. The average video game player wants action, not sit around and wait for a pitch they can hit.

I'm planning to release a beta set tonight for people to provide feedback on this week. Ideally, I'll have a version 1.0 this weekend.

It's good news all around though as the game is improved in a number of key areas, but also not so vastly different that the set needs to reinvent itself.

Just waiting for that roster update...

            2 questions for you:

            - Which pitching interface are you planning on using this year? I got into classic last year and played w/ meter the year before that. Been testing with pulse this year and I believe that will be my preferred option for this year. Just curious which you’re leaning towards?

            - I believe most of us in here like to play w/clean screen approach. But with the upgrades to the pci are you planning on playing with it on or to fade this year? I’ve been playing w/ it on fadeout just to try it and not clutter my view once the pitch comes in. I keep going back and forth with turning it on and off. Haven’t settled in that yet.

Regarding the clean screen approach, I’ve noticed that even with the swing/pitch info turned to off, the pitch type/location/speed still pops up after each pitch but the swing info does not (like it should). Have any of you noticed this? I’ve submitted a bug report and hopefully they’ll patch that and allow for a true clean screen approach. Really wish they would allow us to access that info with a button touch after each pitch instead of having to have it on or off. I jump into the options menu often in a game to just to turn the option on to get the swing info an a previous pitch and then turn it off so. I know it’s minor but tying that info to a button would be so much easier.

            Alright, enough rambling...back to playing/testing!

I've mostly used meter over the years, but used pulse last year. 20 has a much more responsive meter this year, so this set will focus on that.

Having said that, others will work just fine including classic.

I like a clean screen approach, but also like the feedback as it helps with sliders. I compare it to video analysis players use today, so it's realistic to have it on as it helps you learn each player's response.

Correct. I never mentioned the strike zone--I barely even look at that in my analysis.

I use a large sample size of those two output %s. The game already does a solid job on default throwing the proper number of strikes vs balls.

If you just let the game sit and throw strikes to itself, the numbers became inflated as the AI picks up that you're not swinging.

If it was an AI vs AI game, on default (any difficulty) sliders the AI simply makes too much contact and many pitches out of the zone are fouled off.

I'll keep an eye out for it. The only team I see throwing too many strikes on default is a user.

I'd like to get in on this beta of the first version of the sliders if possible. I've been playing a Fantasy Draft Franchise with 2019's settings for the time being waiting to start my actual franchise until version 1 is released.

First post updated for beta version.

I'm trying to lower CGs still from 60 closer to 50, but the issue is that you won't see enough SPs eclipsing 200 IP. Lesser of the two evils.

Please share your results. This game needs patching in a few places as that would save us on a few of these house rules, but it's a really solid game this year.

I'll likely be starting my franchise once the next SDS roster update is done (I'm not a stickler for perfect rosters as they change soon anyway).

Mike, do you do 30 team control with a cpu profile having only lineups/rotations set to manual? I tried doing that but the cpu still changes the rosters

CPU will still make lineup changes unless you have injuries off. They have no choice in the matter. This is part of “injury management “ though actually. If you leave injury management on manual, along with lineups on manual, you won’t see this happen. But then it kind of defeats the purpose letting the CPU do its thing, because you have to manage all their injuries now.

Mike, is there a specific reason for your hitting view? By that I mean, when you suggest that we use anything non-zoom, is there a specific reason for that? I used MLB The Show 15 view since 15 but last year I decided to try out the strike zone 2 view and that's where I've been since.

Just curious on your reasoning for not using a zoom camera. I prefer the look of 15's camera, but I find that I'm more successful at hitting with the strike zone view.

I use 30 team control, but let the AI handle their own business. I try and keep LR spot open for AI teams, but otherwise let them do their thing.

That's exactly why right there. It's too easy and Diamond Dynasty for me and skews the results, for me at least.

Tried these sliders and no ground balls were hit and way too many opposite field hits.
