You have to know what duration to use for each pitcher and each pitch for that pitcher. That varies game to game too depending on confidence levels. It varies also on where you're throwing the pitch and what kind of pitch you want to throw in that instance.
It's complex...you REALLY have to know your pitching staff. It's just a lot of practice with your roster and getting to know them. Sometimes the first inning or two is a "feel things out" period....just like real life...you have to figure out what's working. It's why you play every pitch of every game...get that time and experience...
