TNK - BOSTON RED SOX FRANCHISE
Game #90 of Season
New York Yankees (61-29) @ Boston Red Sox (54-35)
Pitching Matchup – Gerrit Cole vs Josh Winckowski
The Yankees were threatening in the top of the 1st after singles by Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton put runners on the corners with 2 outs and Josh Donaldson lined a ball to the gap in right-center that would roll to the wall scoring Judge while Stanton tried to score all the way from first base but was gunned down on a good relay throw from Bogaerts to the plate for the 3rd out and the Yankees had an early 1-0 lead. The Red Sox answered against Cole in the bottom of the 1st with a 2-run HR from JD Martinez to put Boston on top 2-1 after one inning. The Yankees would tie the game on 3 straight hits to begin the top of the 3rd as Higashioka and LeMahieu started the inning with singles and Aaron Judge followed with a line drive in to LF for a RBI single tying the game 2-2 and Winckowski was in danger of a big inning with two men on base and a run already in with nobody out. Winckowski got a huge first out when Anthony Rizzo popped up to Devers and Giancarlo Stanton would strikeout swinging on a sinker low and away for the second out bringing up Josh Donaldson who has been swinging a hot bat with home runs in each of the first two games of this series. Donaldson would drive a ball high and deep to CF just missing a HR as it hit the wall for a two run double giving the Yankees a 4-2 lead. Cole retired the side in order in the bottom of the 3rd to send the game to the 4th inning with New York leading 4-2. The Yankees put two men on with 1 out for DJ LeMahieu in the top of the 4th as the Yankees look to blow this game open but Winckowski would get LeMahieu to pound a sinker into the dirt and hit a ground ball to Devers starting a huge inning ending 5-4-3 double play. Boston put two men on with 2 outs in the bottom of the 4th but Cole would get Vazquez to pop out ending the threat and sending the game to the 5th inning with the Yankees leading 4-2. Winckowski pitched a 1-2-3 top of the 5th and the Red Sox would threaten again in the bottom of the 5th as Jarren Duran walked and Rafael Devers singled with 1 out putting two men on for Xander Bogaerts. The Sox had managed just 2 hits but were driving the pitch count up on Gerrit Cole who was up over 70 pitches and he would get Bogaerts to fly out for the 2nd out. JD Martinez was up next and would line a ball into the LF corner for a RBI double to cut the Yankees lead to 4-3 with Alex Verdugo coming up for a huge at bat with runners on 2nd & 3rd with 2 outs. Verdugo would make it a tie game 4-4 as he would rip a ball through the hole on the right side and into RF for a RBI single scoring Devers but Martinez would hold at 3rd base setting up runners on the corners for Trevor Story who has been on fire in the first two games of the series. Cole would get Story to fly out to Hicks in CF ending the 5th with the score tied 4-4 but Cole needed to work hard for his outs and was at 87 pitches through 5 innings and we had a brand new ball game heading to the 6th inning tied at 4-4. Josh Donaldson led off the top of the 6th with a double off of Winckowski who would be replaced by Matt Strahm on the mound for Boston. Strahm retired Carpenter before Aaron Hicks hit a bouncer up the middle for a RBI single as Donaldson slid in safely beating the throw from Duran to put the Yankees back up 5-4. Strahm would get through the inning with no more damage and Cole would return to the mound at 87 pitches to begin the bottom of the 6th and Franchy Corder would draw a 7 pitch walk to lead off the inning. Christian Vazquez followed with a single to LF putting two men on with nobody out and Wandy Peralta would come in from the pen to replace Cole on the mound. Jackie Bradley came up and lined a ball into right-center for extra bases as Cordero scored to tie the game 5-5 but Vazquez would get thrown out on a relay to the plate for the 1st out. Jarren Duran would ground out to Rizzo who flipped to Peralta for the 2nd out bringing up Rafael Devers and Peralta would get him to bounce back to the mound sending the game to the 7th inning tied 5-5. Higashioka singled for his 3rd hit of the night leading off the top of the 7th and John Schreiber would replace Strahm with 1 out and two men on and would strikeout Rizzo and get Stanton to ground out to escape the jam keeping it a 5-5 game. Jonathan Loaisiga was on to pitch the bottom of the 7th for New York and would get through the inning to send the game to the 8th inning with the score tied 5-5. Josh Donaldson doubled for his 4th hit leading off the top of the 8th and Schreiber would come back to retire Carpenter & Hicks bringing up Gleyber Torres with 2 outs and Torres would come through lining a ball off the green monster in LF to drive in Donaldson but Verdugo made a strong throw to second base to nail Torres trying to stretch it into a double to end the frame but not before the Yankees took a 6-5 lead. Aroldis Chapman was on to pitch the bottom of the 8th for New York and got Devers to pop up to end the inning and send the game to the 9th inning with new York leading 6-5. Ryan Brasier pitched a 1-2-3 top of the 9th for Boston and the Red Sox would come to bat in the bottom of the 9th against Clay Holmes who was on to try and close it out for New York. Boston had Bogaerts, Martinez and Verdugo due up in the bottom of the 9th and Bogaerts would fly out to Hicks in deep CF for the first out. JD Martinez jumped on the first pitch he saw from Holmes a lined a rocket into CF for a single to put the tying run on with 1 out for Verdugo. Holmes would get Verdugo to fly out to Carpenter in LF and the Sox were down to their final out with Trevor Story coming up. Story had been on fire with 3 HR in the first 2 games of this series but was 0 for 3 on the night and Holmes would earn the save as Story flew out to Hicks in CF and the Yankees win 6-5
