    Re: OOTP 19 Franchise Progress

The Angels swing a deadline deal that likely will give Chris Becker his wish to start while the Angels grab more decent-but-not-great prospects to add depth to the farm.

The primary piece coming back is SS Juan Soto, a promising teenage shortstop that scouts for the Angels are optimistic about.

Meanwhile, the Angels will expand the depth role of Xadreque Sobreiro to include center field.

"We like Xadreque's attitude and willing nature. Rewarding him with more work is a nice bonus to the deal. He's made no complaints about his limited role and plays hard whenever he gets a chance, " Yarrow commented.

      2029 Review

The Angels and the White Sox proved to be the kings of the AL, and it wasn't really all that close. These two organizations rose above a sea of mediocrity in the AL to win over 100 games and handily own their divisions.

There's still some concern, however, about how Mavity performed and now Mukai this year also had a down season. For his part, Mavity's second half was strong and Mukai had battles with nagging injuries. Still, Moulin is contemplating his defensive strategy. He might go the other way - no shifts at all or at least not until the late innings - something that would now be unorthodox since everyone is in love with the shift.

Perhaps the bigger problem is simply that Takada is not the best defender. Not the worst by any means, but he's no Guillermo.

Juan Chairez will be sent to the bullpen, permanently, according to Moulin.

"He came back from his long injury, promptly started having back issues off and on, had a 'sore elbow' that wouldn't go away for weeks, and then more back pain. No, he's going to relief. And not even the heavy-use relief like before, " Moulin commented.

Chairez's production was horrible, easily his worst year. That along with the health status made the decision easy for the Angels manager.

The steady constants? The top and bottom of the rotation. Ohtani had the season of his life, at 34.

-He had more saves (2), than losses (1).

-His one loss came on a 2-1 pitching duel.

-His ERA was below 1.30 at one point.

      -His ERA never reached 2.00.

-His FIP was 1.87, and his FIP- was 40, both career bests.

Total dominance. Perhaps the lighter load helped facilitate this. Ohtani is still hitting, he picked up over 100 PAs and did pretty well with them. Of course, he had dominant seasons in the past with the full workload, but this will be the setup again in all likelihood.

At the bottom spot, Luis Gavilanes has developed something of a cult following among the fan base.

"No idea why he got so popular but we had to produce more Gavilanes jerseys and some fans have made him a section in the stands, " Yarrow commented.

The section, named "Gavil's Lanes", a play on his surname, isn't particularly large, but they love their adopted pitcher.

On the field, Gavilanes was steady and consistent. He ended up with a solid 3.75 ERA and 2.1 WAR on the season. Some point to the fact his ERA is as good as Mavity's as prove that the latter is overrated. FIP disagrees, giving Mavity a measure a full run lower.

On offense, Trout's foray into leading off was not a bad one. His WAR did drop a bit to "only" 6.1, but his OBP was as strong as ever, another year over .400, and he also had good power with 36 HR. He also picked up his 3,000th hit and, for whatever reason, made a career high in getting hit by pitches with 15.

Sakai's power drop off isn't raising any flags just yet. Not only is 40 HR not exactly something to get alarmed over, expecting repeated 60 HR seasons is not a thing...unless the ball starts getting juiced again, perhaps. He's an other that got hit by pitches frequently, in fact leading the team with 16 times.

Vlad Jr probably saved his skin with his rebound. Thirty home runs and a 127 wRC+ is more like what the Angels had in mind. The move to DH makes this all positive as no worries about his diminishing defense.

Jim Lenhart's nearly 30 HR are a career best for him as a hitter, as was his .900 OPS. He posted 2.7 WAR as well. The defense...well that's maybe average at best, especially if he doesn't get to show off his cannon outfield arm, but overall, there's no complaints.

A few of the upper prospects got to play in September action, and Eddie Harriston made a good case for being ready to go next season. Four solid starts with a 2.81 ERA as a result makes the organization very positive on his readiness.

Min-huei Kahng is another that should push for a rotation spot. He had more of a mixed role, some relief, some starting, and all of it was solid. A 2.72 ERA with his changing responsibilities is a good sign. The 23-year-old may well join the rotation next season.

Eric Morrison was displaced from the starting lineup due to his horrible defense at shortstop. Belfiore moved over to shortstop and Cherry slid into third base. That leaves Morrison without a home and relegated to the utility infield role. Time will tell how he'll take to that...and if he'll even keep it.

        Re: OOTP 19 Franchise Progress

The Angels again fell in the Fall Classic, losing in six games to the Reds.

The Reds owned the NL's best record, making the World Series a clash between the best records in the league.

The Angels made short work of the AL competition. After the White Sox got upset by the Blue Jays in the ALDS, that left the Angels as the top team, and they didn't lose a single game in the ALDS and ALCS.

But the Reds offense was too much, including some clutch wins in extra innings, allowing them to have the victory.

"It would have been nice to go out on a win, but that's baseball. Still a successful career and thank you to all the fans of the city of Los Angeles, the only town I've called home as a major league ballplayer, " Kershaw spoke.

Kershaw's 22-year career ends with a 273-122 mark and a 2.85 career ERA. He accumulated 97.3 WAR for a career and piled up 3,748 strikeouts.

You should force Kershaw to unretire so he can get to 300 wins and 4000 K's. lol

How many seasons above 100 wins have you had? Seems like every end of season report I can recall has been ~104-110 wins. Pretty consistent. When you're 2nd in runs scored and 1st in runs allowed, you sort of have to win 100+ games I'd imagine.

Looks like Max Alba played himself out of the team's plans as I don't see him in the rotation or on the DL. Maybe I missed a transaction? Or did he just turn out to be kinda bad? My prospects are still gestating as I approach the end of the 2020 season. I still haven't graduated anyone from the 2018 draft quite yet although a couple of blue chippers are on the way!

Maybe if Kershaw loses the election, I'll unretire him and bring him back to baseball lol. He immediately started running for Senate like two days after the season ended and he retired. "Other ventures", indeed.

Angels have won 100+ six seasons in a row now, from 2024 to 2029.

Prior to that it was two out of six with that one insane year of 117 wins that came out of nowhere in 2020.

Trout somehow still going super strong (and healthy!) at now 38 always helps the offense. In fact, they have tended to be healthy as a group. It's usually the pitchers that get hurt for me.

Alba is still in the organization but he's back in AAA. His 2028 season wasn't very good, 4.77 ERA and he didn't win a spot out of spring training this year, losing out to Gavilanes and the return of Chairez.

With Chairez going back to the bullpen, a rotation spot opens up so Alba can be in competition with Kahng, Gavilanes, and Harriston. I think Harriston is going to be hard to beat if he plays like he should and Kahng is pretty much at potential (at 23!).

Alba could get a bullpen spot. His ratings are still not good, but he could beat out Duensing. I'm pretty much done with Schnaidt. Going to trade him before he hurts himself getting out of bed or something, so finding a spot for Alba to compete in the bullpen would be easier.

I also need to do something about catcher (again). Maybe trade Vlad Jr after all for a real defensive catcher. That way if he's potato at the plate, at least I'm getting Yadier Molina behind it.

Edit: Sheez, everyone and their brother is asking me about Harriston.

              The Japanese Baseball Invasion?

The Angels must be becoming well known for their love of Japanese players since they have been rumored to be offered a very advanced Japanese prospect pitcher in trade during the Winter Meetings.

That attention spread to Japan when the Angels signed posted stud Toshikuni Sakai a few season ago. Sakai had the following of the likes of Ichiro and Ohtani when they crossed the ocean, bringing another crush of media along with them.

The Angels have the most Japan-born players on the roster with potentially six, depending on who breaks camp with the team.

The Twins were the first after Ohtani to land a big star from the NPB. Their catcher, Tomoya Mori, is a beloved figure on both sides of the Pacific.

The A's landed Tetsuto Yamada, a second baseman, back in 2022 and is still going strong at 37 years old.

Former Tigers prospect and Angels SS Tadaaki Fukuda will likely sign a major contract this offseason after establishing himself as an all-around threat.

In all, there are 283 Japanese players across the major league landscape, working in and through all levels of organizations. Many of them are from the independent leagues and are trying to make it up from the international complexes as teenage ballplayers with big hopes and dreams.

Mitsuhisa Murayama, the pitcher mentioned in the trade rumors between the Diamondbacks and Angels, is a product of such scouting. He was found in 2023 and signed by the Diamondbacks. Four years later, he began working through their professional system in Low-A. Two years after that, some say he's ready for the majors after destroying AA hitting with a 13-3 record and a 2.22 ERA.

The Latin American nations are known breeding grounds for major league talent. Perhaps Japan is becoming another such source of talent.

                Hutchinson's Last Year?
Early Talks Rough With Star Outfielder

The Angels came away with a sour taste in their mouths after the initial contact with Dominic Hutchinson's agent.

"I get it, he's an amazing player. But...that's just unreasonable, " one team official commented.

No details would be confirmed on either side, but the whisper numbers thrown around as to the size of the demand are around $50 million per year.

It would seem that Hutchinson is after the largest contract in baseball history. Mike Trout was already MLB's first $40 million man. Perhaps Hutchinson is looking for $50 million.

From the sound of things, Hutchinson can seek that $50 million somewhere else.

"I'm all for keeping our core players together and getting this stuff out of the way ASAP. Stability has been one of the hallmarks of our recent history, but everything has a limit. Ohtani, two-way stud who actually and objectively was the best player in this league for a few years and arguably still the best pitcher and Trout, a sure first-ballot HoFer, didn't get the kind of compensation that was discussed, " Yarrow commented, "no one has gotten that kind of package."

Looks like the Angels are going to have to contend with a contract impasse looming over the season. Neither Hutchinson, nor anyone in his camp, could be reached for comment.

Well, the Carolina Knights' once-promising 2020 season ended with a thud, then a crash, a doink, some clowns getting out of and then back into a tiny car, and then the musical sounds of luminary Benny Hill. A team that was 2 games over .500 (66-64) and just 4 games off the Wild Card pace went 10-22 in Sept/Oct to end up 76-86 and seemingly a billion games behind the Mets who had the opposite type of run to end their season and lock down the NL's 2nd Wild Card. Chris Archer watched the final 3 weeks of the season from the DL; the Knights were almost no hit by Mets' pitcher Justin Dunn in game 162 (which would have been frighteningly apropos). Luckily, Yasiel Puig laced a single up the middle with 2 outs in the 9th inning to kept the team's 3-year hit streak going. It was a tough experience for Carolina looking up in the standings and seeing three 90-plus-win playoff teams in Atlanta, Philly, and New York. The Braves would proceed to top the Cubs 4 games to 3 in the NLCS (after being down 3-0) and lose to the Cleveland Indians 3 games to 4 (after being up 3-1 in the Series). Go figure.

                  ====

The reason I am not doing a proper full recap with graphics and all is that I've decided to re-start this setup with a new save. There have been 2-3 big patches that have affected roster quality, trades/trade block (teams actually use it now), and other things like updated ratings. I want all those bells and whistles in my save from the beginning. I also feel that I've become a little trade-happy especially lately, so I need to institute a couple of simple house rules (max of 5 trades per calendar year/some percentage of those being trading block deals) to keep me honest. Also, I'm not really thrilled with the 6 expansion teams that have been added in 3 years; I want to do the initial expansion and then hold the number of teams there at 32--at least for a good while. Not really thrilled with the 153-game season played in 2019 because of the expansion weirdness either. Still gonna be adding the Carolina Knights and Montreal Expos with basically the same backstory, but carrying on a "cleaner" save.

Roster quality? I haven't noticed any differences so far in the talent levels. Is it supposed to impact things like the draftees and scouting discoveries?

And boy do they ever use the trading block. Seems like half the league is on it.

Twins even looking to trade their stud RF. I guess he wants $50 million per year, too...

What I mean is some players have probably had their ratings adjusted in the previous 2 months. There have also been roster moves and corrections that they do for every patch. It might affect which players are available in the expansion draft and so forth.

                          2030 Angels

BNN has the Angels and the White Sox as being the head of the class in the AL. The Yankees, and perhaps the Twins, could rise up to challenge that dominance of things go their way or against the Angels and White Sox.

In Angels Stadium, defense has become the watchword, especially on the infield.

The starters on the infield, aside from Sakai, were selected for their gloves. Kamai in particular arrives at the majors with a bat that would appear to be average at best. But scouts love his instincts at shortstop, along with his rocket arm and swift feet around the bag.

Belfiore moves to third base where he will help lock down the left side of the infield. His bat isn't terrible as well, looking to play like a contact bat with some doubles potential. At second base, Takada remains and is not bad, but he will probably look slow compared to his teammates on the left side. Takada has the best bat outside of Sakai.

Joe Uselton, picked up in a trade that netted the Mets Vladimir Guerrero, Jr., will, hopefully, finally, just maybe, bring some lasting stability to the catcher position. Uselton will do that with his receiving skills and his arm in cutting down base stealers. The bat has some hope, but looks to be very inconsistent. When he's hot, though, he might do some damage.

If the infield is oriented around defense, the outfield will have to bring the thunder at the plate.

Hutchinson, still without an extension, will handle duties at CF and some wonder about his work ethic now that he has no contract. Some have noted a bit less effort from him. Trout is Trout. Enough said. Jim Lenhart returns for more double-duty at LF. Ohtani? He will give Trout time off if needed (usually isn't) and split time with rookie slugger Zaire McCline at DH.

The loss of Derrick Cherry will be absorbed, hopefully, by the duo of Arturo Navarrette on the infield and Xadreque Sobreiro in the outfield. Navarrette comes to the team by way of the Rule 5 draft and looks similar to Cherry on defense. Sobreiro is back again after a solid performance and a willing attitude to the utility role.

On the mound, things are the same in the top four slots of the rotation. At the 5th and 6th spots, two young Asian arms forced their way on the roster with amazing spring performances.

Min-huei Kahng stated his rotation case with authority after producing a 0.56 ERA in spring action. He allowed just 1 run and 7 hits in 16 innings of work.

Mitsuhisa Murayama, picked up in the Cherry trade, was slated to head to AAA as the Angels were leery of jumping him from AA straight to the majors. However, when pitchers allow just two runs on four hits in 12 innings of work, doors tend to open.

Kahng is less of a surprise as he's scouted as a ready-now arm that the team has seen a glimpse of previously. Murayama, however, shocked the entire coaching staff with his performance. He's thought as needing time to harness that ridiculous change-up of his before it can play to it's peak at the majors. Perhaps that thinking is wrong. Murayama will get his chance to prove just that.

The man who lost the battle is the one the team thought would occupy the sixth spot. That man is Eddie Harriston. The team's top prospect, and 20th overall, struggled mightily in his spring work. Scouts don't like his command just yet, and the result seemed to prove their feelings true.

Another former top team prospect heading in the wrong direction is Ernesto Belloso. Ever since arriving at the professional ranks, he's struggled to advance. His ranking has tumbled all the way to #138 and is perhaps in danger of washing out and being another cautionary tale about hot young pitching prospects.

                            Alex Kirilloff Signs With Twins
                            Slugger Agrees to Five-Year Pact

The Twins had Alex Kirilloff on the trading block during the offseason and spring training, hinting that negotiations are either sour or the team might not want to keep their stud right fielder around.

                            That has all changed now.

The MVP-caliber right fielder and the Twins have hammered out a deal that extends Kirilloff for five more years at a total value of $147 million.

"I'm glad to get this over with. Now, I can concentrate fully on getting us on top of the AL Central again, " Kirilloff spoke.

One key concession the Twins got from the Kirilloff camp is the front-loaded contract.

Kirilloff will make $32 million + incentives in the first two years. Then, the base salary drops to $27 million in the third and fourth years, and finally, $23 million in the final year. Kirilloff will be 37 in that final year.

The Twins officially pulled the slugger off the block on the confirmation of the contract.

                              Angels Complete 2030 Draft

The team picked up a few interesting prospects in the draft.

                              P James Larson, 18, 1st round
                              Scout grades - Cutter 45/70, Slider 40/80, Change-up 20/35, Command 20/55, Future Value 75

James is a lean and lanky frame pitcher that uses the movement on his fastball to offset his average velocity. His cutter and slider look very similar, which allows him to play one off the other with good effectiveness. As he learns to improve the movement and consistency of both pitches, he could use them as two dominant out pitches. The risks, however, are that James will not evolve into a starting pitcher and that he never becomes more refined in the other aspects of pitching like location and keeping the ball down. Should James mature successfully, he should be at least a potential bullpen ace with the possibility of being a #1 or #2 in the rotation. Developing another breaking ball or a two-seamer could go a long way to helping his future prospects.

                              2B Dan Dorfmeyer, 18, 2nd round
Scout grades - Hit 30/70, Game Power 20/50, Raw Power 30/65, Speed 65/75, Field 20/50, Throws 45/55, Future Value 50

Dan has some good things going for him and some serious risks. On the positive side, he has the foundations for a quick, contact-oriented bat on a level plane that could make him a line drive/hard grounder type hitter. This should keep his BABIP high and consistent when he matures. The power is coming as he fills his 6' 2" frame, and that, combined with his line drive tendencies, could lead to a lot of shots in the gap with the occasional ball carrying out if he gets backspin. On the negative side, his fielding doesn't project to more than adequate with no potential to move to short or third. His arm won't play well on the left side, nor does his range. The other downside is what's between his ears. Dan has been known to get a rebellious streak and gets in moods where he slacks off and distracts his teammates, and not in a positive way.

Pitcher Joel Tavira, 20, 5th round
                              Scout grades - 4-Seam 50/50, Cutter 45/50, Curveball 45/55, Change-up 30/65, Command 25/50, Future Value 45

I think Joel could be one of those "greater than the sum of the parts" type of kids. As he stands, he's not weak at any aspect of pitching, being a pretty well developed college pitcher. The pitchibility is there, even if his pitches don't grow much further from here. The only pitch that needs a lot of coaching up is his offspeed, but if he can get it, it could be his best pitch, a true plus offering. In addition, his grind it out attitude and willingness to forge connections with his teammates could future spur his growth. For now, Joel is a safe, high floor and low ceiling type prospect - 4th or 5th starter. But if he catches breaks, Joel may become more.

OF Nate Reimer, 19, 10th round
Scout grades - Hit 25/45, Game Power 25/55, Raw Power 30/55, Speed 55/65, Field 40/60, Throws 60/70, Future Value 50

Nate is an interesting young hitter that could become a solid player in every aspect of the game. The downside to that, if there is one, is that he doesn't seem like he'll break through to that "great" level. The biggest concern with Nate is how inconsistent his hit tool is. When it's working, it augments the rest of his hitting skills, but often it holds back the rest of his game. Nate should be average overall for home runs and extra base hits, and has enough speed to be aggressive against weaker arms or to exploit fielder mistakes. Defensively, Nate should be able to play on the corners. He'll have solid range for a corner outfielder, and the arm should be good enough to handle right field. As a center fielder, he wouldn't be terrible, but his tools won't play up as readily.

Hmm, interesting. I'm not seeing how James Larson is a 75 FV with basically a short reliever profile. His 3rd pitch would need to be much better (and he'd probably need a 4-seamer or sinker) to really be a top starting pitcher, no?
