"Both have made progress in their own ways and I think this is the year they become winning clubs, " one writer commented, "I think both will miss the playoffs with the Foxes again coming agonizingly close."
BNN has the Foxes in the midst of what's looking to be a very mixed up and bunched up NL. The Braves, Nationals, and Dodgers are considered the class of the NL, and almost everyone else is bunched up between 76 and 85 wins.
The Foxes are projected at 83 wins, which would leave them two games short of the second NL Wild Card. The Warriors are also pegged at 83 wins, a handful of games short of the second AL Wild Card.
The weakness for the Foxes are pretty much still the same. The rotation is still considered to be one big question mark...or one big ball of mediocre... which ever is worst. Chirinos will head up the staff, and he's considered to be the best of the five...but he had one of the highest ERAs last season and was displaced to the bullpen. The rest are unproven or unknown in the case of Jorge Rodriguez, who makes the rotation as 5th starter.
The other big weakness is that the infield is a mess. Guzman is more than fine, but the rest of the positions have nothing settled, no one all that well-regarded and just about all of them struggled at the plate last season. Schrock was selected in the Rule 5 draft in hopes of improving the situation a bit. He batted over .320 in AAA in the last two seasons, so the Foxes hope that will translate to the majors.
Another weakness of the lineup is how left-leaning the lineup is. While there's no larger splits in the eyes of scouts, it's a possible issue, especially late in the game where teams could set up lefty relievers to get an upper hand on their end even if the Foxes hitters don't suffer as much.
And that could extend to the Foxes and their lack of lefty relief. The Foxes have some arms that are currently in AAA but still as of Opening Day, they didn't make the squad. Riley Farrell, however, was one of the best relievers last season with a 0.96 ERA. The Foxes may expand his role and hope his dominance continues.
On the farm, the Foxes have shot up to 3rd in the eyes of BNN. They rank Bobby Witt, Jr. as 4th best prospect in baseball. Witt, Jr. might make his way to the majors at some point this season, but for now, he will start at AAA-Honolulu. Also making the top 10 is last season's international signing CF Juan Salas (6th). Scouts think his line drives tendency and his gap-to-gap approach at the plate will let him barrel up pitches as he gains experience. However, he's a high-risk prospect to say the least. Salas will begin play in the Dominican Summer League this season.
Jorge Rodriguez checks in at #78. Then there's three prospects in the bottom half of the top 200. The Foxes are top heavy in the farm at the moment.
Overall, the Foxes are still shaping their roster and building up the talent. Another step forward would keep the fans excited, and the Foxes will look to deliver on that above .500 projection.
And maybe sneak into the playoffs this time.
