My boy Kevins opening day in pony league.....

Well, this is his second year in pony league (Bronco div lasy year and bronco again this year). He played every year prior in Little league, out here in the part of Cali I live in Pony is WAY more competetive (Steals, lead offs, slides, all ok, not in little in some div's).

Last year he played in Bronco division for the Tigers, lo and behold...this year he is on the Broncos div Tiger team again (completely diff squad, his last years squad is the White sox, they tried to get him again this year (stacked club) but we registered too late, and the leauge said no).

No biggie for me, we missed on early league stuff due to family spending so much time in Hawaii (have ohana there now!!) so no biggie for me. He plays where he plays.

They took him because of my clout with the league from last year ( I think LOL), so he joins them tonight in his first game (their forth game already, not counting practices). Some of you older schoolers already know my boy Kev from Halo II (BTW he is migrated to 360 like me!!).

He obviously did not start (nor did I expect him to coming in so late, he has to earn it). But when the manager put him in, in the 4th (they play 7 innings in Pony league), well.....

He came in to replace the right fielder right at sundown, the sun literally was only in right field blinding guys there. My wife eventually showed after her work. I ask her if she has some shades Kevin can wear , she had some!

He now has em' on. the second guy at bat hits a laser to my son!!!......Snagged!!

Sweetness!! The manager asked me after that if my boy played in this league before, I tell him yea, he played last year, same team, same div, he says ahh, Robs squad , I tell him yea, they wanted him but we came late.

    I see him smile.

That inning at bat, while he was on deck, we got our third out, I tell him no worries boy, yer' leadoff next inning.

I was worrying, because our game was to start at 5pm pst, but blue came late and we started at 540pm, grrr.

Here comes my sons at bat, although he has years of experience (he is 12 as of 12/28 last year) he is nervous, this is the first live pitcher he is facing since the playoffs LAST SEASON.

First pitch since the pitcher does not recognize him is you know where, (yes in this league they bring it too) high and in. My boy pulls out of the box before the cathcer even cathes it LOL.

I'm behind the cage behind him, the catcher and the blue.

I tell him to relax, remember last year, its all good no matter what.

Finally he gets to a full count, wow intense!! as this late in the game this is going to be his only AB!!

Next pitch, a tad outside (a breaking ball, yea they throw those here!) he holds his bat a few inches swung out, called ball 4!!!!!

He takes his base, next batter a few pitches in, gets a wild pitch, my boy takes second.

Next guy at bat strikes out.

Next guy singles down the first base line, right fielder was playing tight, this is where my boys track comes in, and his pop warner FB, blows by 3rd, going to home!!!

Everyone yelling (including all the team moms that do not know him yet, remember 1st game for him) go low!! Slide!!!

In without a slide even necsesarry (sp)!!!!!!

He scored a run. End of game speach by manager tells my boy Kev this is your new teamate Kevin, BTW Kevin, awesome hustle running the pads, way to play in your first game with us.

Man, I'm not a wuss, but no lie, times like that you almost tear up hard.

Just wanted to share my son Kevins opening night with OS & DSP (posting it both places hehe).

Thats what all those winters "playing catch" with yer' son are all about.

Alot of you know him from online, he plays a mean FPS. But I wanted to share this with you all.

    thanks for reading,

            Nice story.

Sounds a lot like the league I played in when I was younger (except we were allowed to steal in Little League after the ball crossed the plate and we were allowed to slide).

However, Pony was a big step up from Little League. Bases were further back, the mound was further back, the field was bigger etc.... I saw curveballs in Little League on up. My advice if your son ever decides to take the mound - hold off on curveballs till he's older. A fastball and changeup proplerly located is all he'd need. I saw 3 guys under 16 have surgery on their arms from throwing too much junk at a young age!

In any case, congrats to your son. As long as he's having a good time, that's all that matters!

Stupid question, but it has been 15 years since I was in Little League.

You said Sliding isn't allowed now? What are they supposed to do if there's a play at the plate with the Catcher? My last year they prohibited running over the catcher and forced us to slide (I won't hijack, but I remember getting ejected when the catch gunned the ball where I would have slid trying to hit me). Now what is the rule?

I never managed in pony league, but they sure as heck do slide, in his season last year I was an assistant coach and learned that. This season I'm just a proud fan. But one of our kids (best player on my sons team) yesterday did try to bowl over the catcher at a play at the plate. I loved seeing it, but Blue gave my sons team manager a warning. Appearently not allowed.

I never liked my son playing Little league (rules wise in the early div's), the whole only can steal after the ball croses home plate I never liked.

Pony league is awesome, it's like watching a real major league game almost played identical except that they are all young. But some of these kids pitching (no joke) including the dude with a wicked heater & breaking ball that pitched to my boy. Could even strike some of us out, no lie.

I hated that rule as a kid. I remember my last year we had some hick umping the game. It was a full count, bases loaded, no outs. I was on third, the ump originally called a ball, so I walked home. Then as the runner was halfway up the line to first and I was already 3/4 the way home the ump changed his mind and they had an easy double play tagging me out.

Even worse, my second year of LL. We are in the playoffs and some HS kid is umping. The opposing coach was one of, if not the biggest douche bag who ever coached LL. He berated the ump on every questionable call to the point the kid had enough and left in the middle of the game. The only other person who could ump was our coach, so we had to play coachless and he pretty much had to give them every questionable call (he was that type of man).

Wow, sorry to hijack with my ramblings. But other than the 3 games I mentioned, I loved LL. Well there was one more so what the heck..........

My second year of LL we were playing a team with a sadistic pitcher the kid was real big for his age, as was I. He liked to hit people for fun, sometime 3 straight people so he could strike out the next three. Anyways he broke the arm of one of my friends. I come up next, and the first pitch buzzes my head. I duck out, he is laughing. My coach is screaming at the ump to eject the kid (4-5 kids has already been hit, one was too afraid to go to bat after seeing his twin brother break his arm and was called out). So I get up, take 2 steps towards him while the ump was talking with my coach, slam the bat into my hand twice and point to his arm. I had my mind made up if I was hit this kid's arm was being broken, and he caught the hint. Next pitch I launched into the river for a ground rule double by our rules. As I walked to second I glared at the kid the entire way and was actually warned by the umpire. Go figure, this sadistic kid and hit people for fun and laugh with no warning, I glare I get warned? And if you are wondering why we didn't throw at this kid, our coach was a HS Religion teacher and warned out pitcher if he hit the pitcher he'd be out of the game and off the team.

Some guy a couple of years ago told me about trying out for Pony League if I didn't make the High School baseball team... could've joined but meh.

In our league the rule is you must slide if there is a play being made at home. HOWEVER there is a way "past" this rule. If you do not slide AND make ANY contact with the catcher while the ball is in route to the plate/catcher you are called out automatically. No contact withe the catcher and you are safe. We pretty much order our kids to slide, period.
