    Pitching off Mound vs Flatground

For those of you who have pitched in real life, how big of a difference in terms of velocity does pitching off the mound has over pitching on flatground?

For me, it's about 5 miles per hour, give or take a couple.

Yeah, just adding that incline will add a few MPH to your fastball.

For some reason when I played in high school some schools didn't have a mound, and it seemed like I got hit a lot more when I pitched there

It's definitely much harder to pitch off of a flat mound. For me personally, not having the extra downward force makes a huge difference on my off-speed stuff.

Some of the schools didn't have fields so they had to use fields that were in the neighborhood

I'm not sure how much my velocity changed when throwing off flat ground as I was never clocked on flat ground. I assume it did change since I didn't have the rubber to push off of. I was typically in the mid 80's range with my fastball and occasionally got up to the high 80's if I really needed some extra behind it.

However, if I were to throw a curve or slider on flat ground, there was definitely a difference.

Throwing from flat ground is supposed to be better for your arm. I'm not entirely sure why though.
