Re: How do you hit in ASB?

Last years hitting in ASB was terribly hard at first. I played a season w/ the white sox and my batting avg after amonth as a team was around .250 After the allstar-break, I was hitting about .330 as a team and both magglio and carlos lee were over .400.... hmmmmm. It all had to do with knowing the cpu's pitch tendencies. If you looked at the pitch charts, you would start to notice a pattern for every pitcher, even from Randy and Pedro form time to time. Most of the pitches were thrown low so i used to always position my cursor in the bottom half of the strike zone. Then I would use the pitcher history again to determine what pitch they were most likely to throw. I would always guess the pitch would be down and that helped my power hitting cursor and when I guessed the pitch, my contact hitting cursor would get huge. From there, I would slightly tilt the cursor up,and swing away! Hello .400 averages and single season doubles and home run records!!!!

Okay, for fun let's "compare and contrast" hitting in other games. How do people feel about WSB 2d cursor hitting (or just WSB hitting in general)? Easier or harder than ASB? What makes the difference? If ASB pitchers are predictable, are the WSB ones less so? Let's not forget HH timing/zone style. Though I haven't played HH, I do remember some older games that used this and it seemed a good balance. Easier and more “natural” than cursor, but requiring more skill than timed hitting alone. Does the addition of this style make anyone think differently about ASB 2004? (Though I suppose this wouldn't matter if pitchers remain "predictable," I suppose)

I'm not as interested in the "real batters don't have a floating paddle in front of them" debate as much as what system people like to hit the ball (and if their favorite game using that system has other flaws “messing it up" such as predictable pitching, etc.)

I find everyone’s thoughts very interesting.

From what you guys have just described All Star seems to be a terrible hitting system once you have had some time with the game. Still not as bad as triple play last year though.

I had ASB last year (ps2), the only way I could stand it was manage only mode, which didn't have a hit& run, and that made it even less playable. I sold it, got HH, and never looked back. I can honestly say I don't know how ASB can be high on anyone's list. I'm not saying that to be rude, or piss anyone off...that's just how I feel. I'll probably go with WSB this year, though. I may rent HH and see if it's actually that much better than last year.

Re: How do you hit in ASB?

I created all 25 players on my team and played a 162 game season. My worst hitter hit 250 with 7 HR and my best was 350 with 34 HR. Team batting average was close to 300. The hitting attribute can make hitting realistic if no player is above a C. A C+ will give a player above a 350 average. Above C+ and its 400. That was the problem with no player editor last year was most of the players were above a C+. This year with a player editor I feel ASB will have extremely realistic stats after a full season. But the key to hitting is knowing pither tendencies which was a game within a game. If it is a fastball, really no chance of moving the cursor to reach it. However, off-speed stuff you can reach it with the cursor. I played a lot of 3 to 2 games with D to C hitting. Also if strikeouts are getting too frustrating change to easy batting with two strikes once an inning. For me this didn't really help the average but gave me about 7 Ks a game instead of 14. Oh yea, I played the entire season on the All Star level. The hitting can be fun when the games are close but I totally relate to the gripes that the game is boring. No real sound and blowouts are tuff to finish playing.

Those are great ideas 2nd base, but I would never want to have to revamp the whole game just to enjoy it.

I hear ya. I wanted a game to go through 162 games and the stadiums in HH were offensive so ASB was my game by default. I wanted to make it work. This year they all look good.
