Unibased...Semi-review of ASB 2004 from new Xboxer

First off, let me say that in no way am I a huge video game guy, but I love the sports games tremendously. I really got into these games by playing ASB 2001 on my lil bro's N64. I have played baseball my whole life (I'm 30 yrs old now), and I'm blown away at how far along it has come on video game systems. I have never bought a video game system, just gotten my bro's hand me downs. I did get the Xbox for my B-Day, but mainly because I did not have a DVD player. I must say that I am hooked now, and the realism is insane. I have gotten Madden 03, NHL 2K3, Max Payne, Slater's Surfing, and the two that came w/ the system. I play by myself now, because I'm in NY, and my bro is in San Diego..my hometown.

Now, this is a semi-review only because I have rented the game and been playing it for the past four days. I don't own any baseball games yet and will try them all before buying. This is truly the only way to know for myself which is best. Forget those bafoons that review in the magazines, because from the looks of them I bet they haven't even held a baseball or bat their entires lives. Their opinions are like a-holes and they all have one. ha

When I first loaded up the game, I thought that the visuals of the stadiums were great and presentation great. The music of the Natural was cool, but does get a bit old after alot of gameplay. Most soundtracks do, if your logging a ton of hours on one game anyways. The menus were a breeze to go through even for a pathetic gamer like myself.

The gameplay- plenty of options for all levels of skill and for my first few games I went easy batting with your basic pitching aids on . I must say this, I really thought that the gameplay on the N64 was better than on the Xbox, and I was truly surprised by this. I don't know maybe it's me but the controls when using cursor battting (which I used after gaining some skills) seem a bit tight. Mayb this is just the Xbox controller, I don't know. I also seemed to have a large number of check swings and this really pissed me off, but maybe it's just because I suck. ha. The computer played me very tough most of the games, and I agree with others that those pathetic home run cut scenes must go. Leave some suspense in their and let's admire the flight of the ball. I also definitely noticed the large amount of comebackers that the pitcher snags and that got a bit old, as well. For those complaining of the batting being to hard, suck it up and go out back and hit some balls off the tee ball tee! ha. I suck more than anyone and even I was able to start hitting w/ the cursor on all-star.

Now, this is a very sparse review I know, but overall I think it is a fun game. It seems to be packed full of features which is great, but I think it definitely needs some gameplay improvements. I don't know, I thought the N64 2001 was better, maybe some of you agree? I would get this game if it were the only one out, but honestly think that the MVP or 2K3 series will end up being better. In all fairness I think you really need to own a game for a couple of weeks and play it thouroughly to post an accurate and fair review. Problem is...once we buy a game, I think we are all biased towards it in defending our $50 purhcase.

I don't know. I know I have no problem admitting that I bought NCAA Basketball 2K3 and March Madness 2003, and hated both. Same thing with NCAA Football 2K3.
