So I Just Bought OOTP 9...

    Hey guys!

So I bought OOTP 9 today, and overall so far I'm a bit disappointed. I downloaded a custom roster off of the official messageboard, and it fixed some early issues I had with the game, but there's still a few things that frustrate me.

First, the AI for opposing GMs is a little wack. For example, with trade difficulty set to Average, I was able to trade Wes Helms (as the Phillies) for Jon Lester, and Ervin Santana among others. So i said screw that, let's try Hard AI. Now I can't make even a simple lopsided deal to get Helms off my roster. There's no happy medium it seems.

Also, the scouting system is a bit messed up. I think the roster I downloaded signed all the best available scouts to other teams, so now no one is available and I'm stuck with a lousy one. So I either have scouting turned off, or I get bad information. It's a lose lose. I'd play without the updated roster but then player ratings are just a mess. On the default roster Cole Hamels is barely a good #3 guy despite the fact that he is one of the top pitchers in the majors, and most of the highly touted prospects are rated low in both ability AND potential. It just makes no sense to me.

I don't want to sound like I'm just whining to put the game down...I love baseball, I love baseball stats...and this game has a lot to offer, but these issues are just killing the experience for me right now. Does anyone have any tips to help a noob out? Thanks!

Even the best scouts will be off.

The hardest thing to remember when playing OOTP and using a Majors roster set is that the scouts don't know who Cole Hamels is.

You know he's a good pitcher and chances are he's been rated as such by the roster editor but the scouts have no clue. They come into the game just making their own assumptions based on their talent level and randomness assigned to them.

There may be something your scout doesn't like in Hamels and he may value that more than whatever it is that makes Hamels so good.

I know the argument is, "But it's Cole Hamels. He's obviously good so what dumb scout wouldn't notice that?"

Just keep in mind, this scout hasn't scouted Hamels and doesn't know a thing about him. The scouts in OOTP are like that new guy that never watched an MLB game. He sits down and he sees Hamels and says, "No, he's not that good."

His stats say otherwise, but he'll say, no.

We see that sort of thing in MLB all the time. Scouts pass off a guy that ends up being great. That's being simulated here.

With that in mind, playing MLB on OOTP isn't really the best experience. The game just isn't designed to really simulate the MLB. It's designed to simulate baseball. And the strength in OOTP is creating your own fictional universe.

Thanks for the great input Yankee Pride. I didn't realize that was the strength of OOTP baseball...but I'll have to give a fictional league a try.

When you play, though, do you turn off the scouting system or do you leave it on?

I like it on but I've been reading quite a few comments from regular players that they are split on this decision.

Scouting, it seems, is extremely varied. There is no guarantee and guys with great numbers are at times listed as questionable by good scouts. So that can be frustrating to some of the regulars.

I think scouting on makes the game harder and is always a good option to use if the game is becoming too easy to stock pile talent and win championships.
