The 3DO Company signed a deal with Microsoft today to develop and publish games for their Xbox system worldwide, the company announced today. The announcement comes a couple months after they became a GameCube third party with Army Men, Cubix and a few all-new titles.
"Microsoft has proven their commitment to making Xbox an outstanding gaming system," said Trip Hawkins, chairman and CEO of The 3DO Company. "We're looking forward to bringing some of our most popular brands, as well as new original titles, to this powerful system." Xbox third-party honcho Ed Fries was similarly bubbly: "Our quest to bring unparalleled gaming experiences to the player means partnering with top development talent. We're happy to be working with the creative folks at 3DO."
The announcement is actually a reversal of policy for the financially troubled publisher, which is busy preparing a reverse stock split to keep Nasdaq from delisting the company on its stock exchange. Hawkins told the Reuters news service last November that the Xbox is "a challenging opportunity for game publishers to make a profit from it" and said that 3DO will concentrate on other systems for the foreseeable future. Guess he changed his mind.
3DO haven't announced any concrete Xbox titles yet, but an Xbox port of High Heat MLB, the little baseball game that could, seems like an obvious choice. We'll keep you updated as they release more information.
