    Something I've been wondering

When a ball is hit in the outfield gap, and it is going to be a triple no matter what the outfielder does, what is to stop the outfielder from picking the ball up and throwing it into the crowd in order to get a ground rule double. I'm not sure how this would work, and would just like to see if the is a rule for this.

I believe that batter would advance two bases, which would make for an inside the park home run. Not sure though, can I get some confermation on this?
