If you use Zone, Classic, or Easy hitting modes and you have problems catching up to fastballs try this. Tilt the joystick (the right analog stick on PS2) to try to pull the ball. Even though there's no cursor (in Zone and Easy modes), you can still pull the ball or try to go to the opposite field just like in Normal hitting mode. Tilting the cursor to the left if your a right-handed batter or to the right if your batting left-handed shortens up your swing, allowing you to catch up to the fastballs better.
I've just tried that a few times and have hit mamoth home runs with Soriano, B.Williams, and K.Garcia. In Bernie Williams' case, i tilted the cursor to the opposite field because I guessed changeup and I was able to lengthen my swing just enough to hit a homer.
