Thinking of switching from 2K10 to MLB10

Thinking of switching from 2k10 to MLB10. This will require me buying a playstation 3 and MLB10.

Money aside, is there THAT big of a difference between the two games? Please, if you bought a PS3 solely to get this game, do comment.

I've read the issues/bugs this game has with franchise etc. that may or may not get fixed and 2k10 has it's own issues as well which is why I'm so on the fence about it.

I do like the control system 2K10 has with the swing stick and gesture pitching better than what I've read about the show. 2K10 is much improved this year. BUT, from watching videos the shows graphics and animations are leaps and bounds better than 2k10's.

Just wondering if I switch if I'm going to see some similar nagging issues with MLB10 that I also have with 2k10. Trade logic, free agency, bad AI managing logic (pulling starters early or too late, etc.), bad in game AI logic such as throwing to a cut off man instead of trying to make a play at the plate.

Really on the fence here people, discuss/comment please. The money itself isn't so much the issue as it is the principle of buying a PS3 just for the Show. I don't want to do this only to find the Show isn't much different/better than 2k10.

    Thanks in advance!

Re: Thinking of switching from 2K10 to MLB10

This is my first post on this site, though I come here a lot and think it's a pretty incredible community. I've been playing sports video games for the better part of 20 years and, with the exception of Call Of Duty, play exclusively sports titles. I buy a new game for all 4 major sports every year and these forums are my go-to source for information. So, I guess that's a long-winded way of saying "first time caller, long time listener".

Blazzen, I was totally in the same situation as you this year. Up until this week I only owned an xbox 360 and so I've been playing 2K Baseball for the past few years. Sure, last year's title had issues, but I still found it fun enough to play through the summer. At some point last year, I tried out MLB 09: The Show at a Best Buy and since that iteration was so much better than 2K's effort last year, the seed was planted in my head that maybe I'd take the plunge in 2010 and get a PS3 for the Show.

I spent all day Tuesday trying to decide what to do (the 7.0 IGN review didn't help...) but ultimately opted to go with 2K10. I played it for a few hours that night and found it pretty enjoyable - the game ran smoothly, the graphics were pretty good, the announcers and presentation were very well done, the batter vs. pitcher element was superb (I was actually having fun trying to lay off of pitches outside of the strike zone, where in the past I'd mostly just wanna get my hacks in), and the My Player mode was fun. On the flipside, I thought the menus were pretty terrible, the player models were a little suspect, the cannon arm thing was pretty offsetting and generally every aspect of the gameplay outside of pitching and hitting (particularly fielding) left something to be desired. At the end of the day, I felt like it was a great update by 2K and that 2K11 might very well compete with the Show (though at that point, I didn't really know exactly what that meant, since I'd never owned the show).

So all day Wednesday I read reviews and these forums and talked myself into giving the Show a shot. Like you, this would require buying a PS3 which, although I've kinda tried to convince myself otherwise, will be used almost exclusively for one video game. I'm not made of money by any means, but, like you, money isn't a real issue - it was more the principle of dropping $299 (also, if you do buy one, don't forget you'll need to buy an HDMI adaptor. Out of the box, my PS3 only came with an SD hookup.) Long story made slightly shorter, I bought the system and the game and spent Wednesday night and a little bit of yesterday playing MLB 10: The Show on my brand new PS3.

I'll say this much: I don't regret my decision, but I wasn't as floored as I expected to be. It's probably significant that I'm still coming to these forums to read things for both games and didn't bring my 2K10 game with me to trade in for the new system. Ultimately, the Show is a better baseball game. It looks AMAZING and those "little things" that you're reading about and that are probably causing a lot of your angst over whether or not to take the plunge are undeniably cool. Here's the thing, though: I'm not positive yet that this game is more fun than 2K10. (All of what I'm about to say comes with the obvious caveat that I'd played 2K in the past, so the learning curve was virtually non-existent compared to a fairly steep one (including just holding a different type of controller) with the Show.)

First, pitching is way better in 2K and it's no contest. I guess some dismiss the 2K pitching controls as "Street Fighter" moves or whatever, but I've always enjoyed the setup and it's improved this year. The Show's pitching controls definitely feel "last-gen" and, while they work fine, just don't hold my interest throughout the game as well as 2K's do. For batting, I'd say it's a toss-up. Both are challenging, as they should be, but neither seems as definitely superior as the pitching controls do. RTTS vs. My Player is a close call, too. I think I enjoyed the 2K version a bit better, but if these modes in other games (i.e. NHL 10) is any indication, they're merely a fun distraction until I get going in franchise mode. Everything outside of batting and pitching (e.g. fielding, menus, etc.), though, is definitely better in the Show. Also, regarding those "little things". If you're anything like me, you buy a video game and the first few times you play it, you appreciate the little touches and try to take everything in. But, by the middle of July when you're 75 games into your franchise season, you're probably just mashing the A button through the cutscenes to get back to the action.

I'm obviously not deep enough into any modes to comment on their specifics and I'm sure you've read about the issues that each title seems to be having. The one thing that's really impressed me is how involved the development team for the Show seem to be and how determined they appear to getting everything fixed in a hurry. As a "franchise" guy, the other aspect of the the Show related to these forums that's got me really excited is community rosters. I think it's going to be amazing to download the rosters done by Knight et al. and not have to worry about having to create a bunch of prospects. (I know 2K has roster share as well, but by the sounds of it, these guys trump the efforts made by the 2K community.)

Anyways, I guess those are the overall early impressions from a guy who stood in your shoes 4 days ago. I'm ultimately glad I made the choice I did because it's fun to get a different baseball game experience and because I like having new toys (maybe I'll buy a Blu-Ray DVD to check it out!). MLB 10: The Show is unquestionably a better baseball video game, but to me, the difference isn't as great as, say, the IGN reviews would let on. If you've got the money to spend and want a new baseball experience (and to see some incredible graphics), I'd say take the plunge. That said, I still haven't decided that I'm definitely going to sell my 2K10 game any time soon.

Hope that was at least a little useful. If you have any specific questions, let me know!

      This was extremely helpful.

I too expect to be "floored" if I take the plunge on the show. The Blu-Ray player is a non issue for me since I already have a Sony Blu-Ray player that also plays DVDs and upconverts them to 1080P. I won't even use the Blu-Ray player portion of the PS3 nor would I use the web browsing because I have a desktop and two laptops.

What you've said is what I've generally gathered from reading. The Show overall is better - better stats, details, graphics, etc. But 2K10 has the "fun factor" because of the analog controls which I like a whole lot.

I think I may actually wait on getting a PS3 and the show. Maybe see how the patches for each game play out, etc. and make my decision then. I already have 2K10 and have been playing it, developing sliders for it etc. I've owned the game since I've owned an Xbox 360, (2k7, 2k8 and 2k9) so it would be a shame for me to not give the best effort 2k's put out so far it's fair chance.

      Thanks for the reply!
