The learning Curve in OOTP can be really different depending how you choose to play the game. I mostly plays fictional Leagues which I take time to setup to my on likening, so the difficulty is often for which numbers to use for some parameters. When I play OOTP I sometime just setup a league and sims a couple of years to see how it plays out.

When playing OOTP I think is a good idea to see which option you like to use and if it feels overwhelming it may be a good idea to not use every option, Scouting can be very challanging so it may be a good idea to not use it. Try to find which option works for you.

I started playing OOTP when 7 was released and one of my most best remembered mistake is giving Andrew Jones a 5 year with yearly pay of 20 million after a MVP season, He ended Pinch hitting for the last two years of that contract. After that I learned to be careful of giving big contracts to aging players. Now I have houserules for drafting and trading so I don't take advantage of the AI and often plays small budget teams for the extra challange.

Just go through some seasons with low game totals. It'll force you to go through free agency and arbitration and the draft and all that. You'll get used to it. I was overwhelmed at first as well, almost to the point that I stopped playing the game. Use the online manual (I know there was one for OOTPX, I assume there is one for 11) and don't worry if you suck at first. You'll get used to it. It's a lot of trial and error.

Another newbie question - are all the real prospects for MLB included in the game and can someone explain whether prospect ratings are consistent with how they're rated IRL?

        Thanks

Yes all prospect are in the rosters that comes with the game even the draft have some of the big names included. How they are rated is a diffcult question but I would say the ratings is rather accurate for how the prospect were percived before the season, now on some you may disagree but these ratings can be very hard to establish as it is very little concrete to go on but if some prospect ratings feel off you can always change it. Though I would recomend that you give fictional leagues a try as that is where much of the value lies in my opinion.
