Last night i was searching for World Series Baseball 2K3 in the basement and found an old PS One copy of Hardball 99. I haven't thought about it in years and popped it in. Ok, the graphics are amazingly awful. I played this for two seasons in 98 and 99 and i'm surprised I still have vision left. It's a hundred times worse than High Heat on its worst day. But getting past the graphics, there were a few things that impressed me.
This game came out in 1998 for the PS One. Yet it had all kinds of features. You could set HUMIDITY levels for crying out loud which had an effect on home runs. It had custom seasons, you could control only four teams, but I think you could change them as you went along. You could set manager strategy for the teams you owned - like stealing, hit and run, etc. Hardball also had in game saves and you could also save highlights to a file. The gameplay by today's standards is still not that bad. I was impressed that I gave up four runs in the first inning and none of them were attributable to home runs. I ended up playing for two hours and really enjoyed it. I don't think there is any franchise - that's a big downside. And don't get me wrong, I'm not saying we should all go out and start playing Hardball - today's games are obviously much more advanced and deep. But just from an observational standpoint, this has got to be one of the more underrated games that came along. The AI was pretty good and the options were plentiful. I do remember having two great seasons on this and had a blast. Do any of you guys remember this one? What were your impressions, opinions?
