Thinking of starting a Baseball video game collection.

I was born into a family of Baseball fans and I am one myself but my hobby since childhood has been video games and movies 1st and Baseball a very distant 2nd. But what does this mean? It means through out the years as a kid I have enjoyed a lot of fun Baseball games. But I never really bought them. I usually just rented the latest good Baseball game available on the console I owned and played some exhibition games.

I didn't start buying them until I discovered MVP which was the 2004 season (with the lefty glitch). Been buying them every year since but all those old Baseball games I have fond memories of as a kid are not in my extensive collection of video games. The games I loved as a kid are:

    RBI Baseball (Genesis games)
    World Series Baseball 94/95/96 (Genesis)
Frank Thomas' Big Hurt Baseball (PS1)
    All Star Baseball (N64)
    Triple Play Baseball 98/99/2000 (PS1)
    World Series Baseball 2k1 (Dreamcast)
    World Series Baseball 2k2 (Dreamcast)

And then that was it until MVP. I actually enjoyed WSB 2k1 a lot. Played it many Summer nights.

I want my Baseball video game collection to go beyond this though. Maybe I'll even buy the bad Baseball games out there for collection purposes. So... how many Baseball games do you own? If you want to list them all. It should help me. And what is your number 1 favorite Baseball game of all time to date? As of right now, I own:

    MVP Baseball 2004
    MVP Baseball 2005
    MVP NCAA Baseball 06
    MVP NCAA Baseball 07
    MLB 07 The Show
    MLB 08 The Show
    MLB 09 The Show
    MLB 10 The Show
    MLB 11 The Show

I never sell my games if I like them, not even sports games. My favorite to date has to obviously be MLB 11 The Show. But if I manage to buy PYS 2011 that might take the top spot.

I'd suggest getting the last two games of the All-Star Baseball series (04 and 05 I believe). The series had it's flaws, but was way ahead of it's time in some areas of the game. It's expansion mode was incredible.

I've actually thought about doing this too, starting a collection of the good baseball I missed owning as a kid.

Find an NES and try to find RBI there. Also recommend Baseball Stars. 1st game to my knowledge that you could create a team of your own. And you could climb the wall!

Today I bought MLB 98. I want to start off by getting all of Sony's MLB games. This should be fun especially since all the old Baseball games are dirt cheap. I'll be buying the Triple Play games too.

I was thinking of starting a collection but just didn't get that into it and then decided to sell the ones I don't play. My favorite baseball game is still NCAA MVP Baseball 07. It is just a more playable game for a casual gamer like me.

For nostalgia 'Earl Weaver Baseball' circa 1987 on the PC. One of these days I want to find an original copy and get it working on DosBox.

The article below explains why it was so great - the custom stadium creator was amazing...

Back in the day I also played alot of Tony Larussa and Star League Baseball and thought EA's NCAA baseball was fun. These days it's all about PYS and some occassional 2K.

I still have my Mattel handheld baseball game that came out in like 1978.

Still got my Intellivision baseball game, too. Played that thing to death when I was young.

I must say that after getting composite video cables for the original Xbox, playing MVP 05 is awesome. I had it for the PS2 but just couldn't get into it but that enhanced graphics make it a keeper.

If you've got a computer, try to get Front Page Sports Baseball '96 and '98 as well as High Heat '01-'03. '04 is better as a console game, as the PC version has crap mouse support.

I still have all my FPSBB games. LOVED THEM!!!! Of course I still have the Hardball games as well as HH.

Loved the CAMS camera system in the FPS series of games. I really really wish someone would update FPSFB with todays graphics..

Frank Thomas Big Hurt Baseball also played pretty good on the Sega Genesis.

Generally, I tend to concentrate on later day games for most of the systems I have.

This means I've got the final two Triple Play games for PS1 (Triple Play 2001 and Triple Play Baseball). I've been meaning to get MLB 2004 and MLB 2005 for PS1, the final Sony baseball releases for that console.

As we speak, I own Major League Baseball 2K9, 2K10 and 2K11 for the PS2. At one point, I had MLB 09 and MLB 10: The Show for PS2.

These titles above were being released for the PS1 and PS2 for years after the successor system was out on the market. Thus these titles were mostly roster updates with no noticeable new features. However, they were all based on previously proven engines from earlier in a successful baseball game series. Thus those games were at their absolute peak engine wise, if not necessarily in terms of features or bells and whistles.

                          Hope that makes sense.

For games released during a system's prime, I'd second All-Star Baseball 2005. I own it on the Xbox but am sure it is also enjoyable on Playstation 2. Even today, you'd be shocked at how deep the Franchise mode is. A person could get lost in it.

I also think you should consider checking out Sony's PS2 baseball games that came before The Show. MLB 2004, 2005 and 2006, for example. They all had their pros and cons. Another one I'd suggest checking out, just for curiosity's sake, is World Series Baseball 2K3 for PS2 or Xbox. That particular game offered a very unique option in which a player could compete in an MLB Franchise Mode using fictional players (randomly generated names).
