Re: Interesting read about the future of the MLB license

EA is pretty funny....They take it personal when a platform holder release their own sports games, like when they basically told MS to shut down their Sports games if they wanted EA Sports games on their system.

If they release MVP for the PS3 (which would be good for baseball gamers) then hopefully they don't renew the NFL License or at least it is altered to where it is similar to the MLB one. And then we could see Sony take a crack at a Football Title again for the PS4's launch.

I don't want to put words in this poster's mouth, but I believe they mean that MVP really wasn't that great of a game. It was loved by the community on the PC because we could customize it. But in MVP 2003, you couldn't even slide, the CPU did it for you. In 2004, the lefty home run bug ruined the game. In 2005 they made wonderful strides and produced their best game to date, but then it all ended. It never became what the Show has become. So I would expect it to be a bumpy road back.

I do hope, despite the bumps, they choose to take that road.

Even if EA does jump back into it, it will take time to turn it into a viable competitor. Sports games are always rusty in their first few iterations. I can't think of any sports game I played in it's first year that didn't clearly need TONS of work. I can think of many that showed promise and were fun to play, but it always takes time.

You know what though, if EA just updated MVP's graphics, stadiums, rosters and incorporated the newer mechanics from their college series many people would be jumping up and down and peeing their pants. I am even willing to bet it would sell more then 2k's newest version just because it had MVP on the cover.

I loved EA's take on baseball with the 2 releases of MVP College Baseball. Wish they would bring that back.

Re: Interesting read about the future of the MLB license

Having not played MVP (all those enthusiasm for the series certainly gets me interested) I cannot really tell from experience, but it is actually good as a sim-oriented game or as an arcade-type game?

The Show hits the sweetest spot for me being sim-oriented, so I wouldn't be so interested in other baseball games unless they become as good as the Show right now (no easy task IMO).

But whenever I see posts by someone who claims that MVP is still the best baseball video game, their reason seems to be because the game was playable in more arcade-ish ways.

Maybe that's the niche the new baseball franchise goes for, rather than going right against the Show. That might be a good thing, to have some healthy competition, but also for gamers who want arcade baseball... it seems the Show's realism can be too frustrating for some gamers.

I was just going to post something like this. All EA would have to do is release their next baseball title with same code for the MVP series and people would jump all over it.

Then they'd realize that it needs major upgrades to compete with The Show. For as good as a good as MVP '05, it's terribly outdated and irrelevant. Sadly, 2k needs to just step aside after this year and let some other company take it over. Back when 2k7 came out, we heard talks of a three-year plan, which excited me at the time (I owned a Xbox at the time) because it looked like they were on pace to give The Show a run for their money, but they regressed horribly during that "plan." Enough so that I was fed up and moved to PS3 exclusively to play The Show (and Metal Gear). All my favorite games are sports games and since many exclusive titles are becoming cross-platform (Mass Effect) I'd rather go with something that has more value over the long haul.

As for your point Hustlin I would agree with you that people are stupid (my words, not yours) enough to buy a game just because of the nostalgia factor. MVP was a great series, but it too suffered from a lack of a MLB license and its college baseball game wasn't all that great.

No, it's put out by Sony, so it will only be on Sony systems, much like how Halo would never be on anything but Microsoft systems.

Yeah. I loved the analog controls they had in the college baseball games.

Yes they need to bring back the college baseball game. I never played the second one but loved the first one.

You seem to be spot on. There was a happy medium between sim and arcade, with a slight edge to the arcade style.

On a scale from sim to arcade, it would go
The Show, 2k?, MVP, Triple Play, the Bigs, Slugfest.
