Which game: MLB 2K12 or The Show?
Hey guys, Gronk here. I got the Bigs for Xbox a couple of days ago. It's ok, but a little unrealistic IMO. Players jumping 10 feet in the air for a ball, jumping off the wall for the ball etc. So I want a better baseball game, more realistic. So, which should I get? The Show or MLB 2k12? Which has better gameplay? Which has a better career mode, especially?Ravens: In Ozzie We Trust

I am also in the same boat as you. But my requirements are more specific.
I am looking for the best career mode between The Show 12 and 2K12.
-I am not overly concerned about graphics.
-I am concerned about gameplay and more of a sim-baseball feel as oppose to acrade.
-Which one give you more control over simming certain aspect. Say for example I just want to hit not bother with the fielder.
-I am also concerned about content. So far my benchmark for a career mode is NBA2k12....
Something I keep reading over and over in different reviews, 2K12 pitching is more real/intuitive.... -

-Graphics are top notch...even though it's not a concern(I'm with you...I'll take a better playing game over a better looking/sounding one any day of the week)
-With this there is no question IMO....the Show plays a much better game of baseball and the sim stats are top notch. You'll be hard pressed to find any glaring anomalies with stats as per the ratings(you'll have lots of rosters to choose from for this as well....stock SCEA...and user created)
-With the Show you get to choose to have auto fielding and you just hit and pitch...you can also choose auto baserunning and auto throwing if you like as well. While you cannot just pitch or hit(and have the other one auto...YET......) you can choose different difficulties for each and every aspect of hitting/pitching/throwing/running...you can mix and match them.
-I don't play much RTTS(the carreer mode)...but it's all about on field. Very little off the field interaction. You can request things from your manager...but outside of baseball ops.....there is no "buy a car".....things like that.
-Lastly....there are TONS of historical rosters for the Show as well. All top notch work. This is a great replay value add for the Show.

Buy one of them now, and when black friday rolls around, pick the other one up. One of them should be on sale that day for a very good price.
They both have very strong positives and some negatives, but I would still recommend both.Comment

What are the positives of MLB 2K13 and do those positives outweigh The Show 12. I am not concerned about graphics, i am all about gameplay and content.Comment

Re: Which game: MLB 2K12 or The Show?
Where 2K does a great job is in presentation, commentary, and stat tracking. The commentary and stat-tracking is FAR better than The Show's overall. Presentation is a little more subjective as both games do different things well (and Sounds of the Show gives SCEA major points in this area).
2K baseball tracks an incredible amount of stats during a season and from year to year in franchise. It keeps detailed record info, tracks yearly awards, keeps track of splits, tracks injuries, etc (side note-I love the chronic injuries feature-though The Show has manual injuries which is awesome for different reasons). It's one of the more impressive aspects they have going for them and makes their franchise more engaging on it's own merit IMO (in other words, if game play and AI/sim engine were equal in both games, I'd probably prefer 2K's franchise mode. It's not equal though, which is where The Show really distances itself IMO). It's also worth noting that 2K has the current playoff format and The Show doesn't.
Commentary is excellent (and this is coming from a guy who hates 2 of their 3 commentators) and the level of recognition to season milestones, league info, etc is top notch. Presentation follows suit with a ton of overlays and info.
2K also has a more detailed rating system as well, with individual ratings for positions, how catchers call games, doubles, triples, etc.
The trouble with 2K in all of this is that, while it certainly provides all this info and detail, it doesn't translate as well onto the field as many of the ratings don't mean all that much, the sim engine is flawed, etc. Both games have bugs and some freezing issues reported this year. For what it's worth, I've not had any major issues with either (except a newer 2K issue, which I'll explain in a bit).
2K can be tweaked to play a solid game, but it takes rating adjustments, heavy slider tweaking, etc. That won't solve AI issues of poor bullpen management, guys not covering the field or backing each other up correctly, questionable substitutions, etc. Roster logic is spotty in both games (and, IMO, sports games in general).
Finally, it needs to be mentioned that 2K currently has a near-crippling bug with their MLB Today feature (which impacts the entire game) since Oct. 3. The game simply will hang up on the main screen and not play. You have to change your system clock back to an earlier date to play. This is very minor on PC, but on consoles (especially the 360 now-apparently a dashboard update made this more complicated) it can be a pain. There are steps in the 2K forums here that can walk you through.
To sum up, The Show is "there" already and 2K plays like a WIP..promising, but not quite there. I'd recommend The Show completely. It's more polished, better supported, etc. I like 2K12 and am currently enjoying my franchise in it, but I'd only recommend 2K for PC, fully modded, and steeply discounted. I don't think the gap in quality is even debatable, but there is a level of preference between the two and plenty of people prefer 2K's brand and game play controls/interaction to SCEA's.Last edited by SoxFan01605; 10-28-2012, 02:55 PM.Comment

Re: Which game: MLB 2K12 or The Show?
It's not even close, MLB The Show by a mile, been playing the series since 06, and it's on another level when it comes to sports games, you will not find a Simulation of a sport that does it better then The Show. The Show is baseball, and if you head to the forum, you will see people are still playing this game religiously, even though it came out over 6 months ago.Comment

Re: Which game: MLB 2K12 or The Show?
After watching and reading endless reviews I am deciding to purchase MLB 2K12.
Here are the 2 video reviews that finally helped me make the decision.
The reviewer was very objective:
The reviewer was slightly biased towards The Show 12, but as the review progressed into the career modes - it started to settle down and become more objective:

but you will love the franchise mode in 2k12. bugs be damned.
clutch it tight. its probably the last one.
which brings me to the reason why you should go with 2k12 [you already did].
Experience that one for a cheap end of the season price, and keep your eye on The Show 13.
By March you can have both.Comment

Re: Which game: MLB 2K12 or The Show?
I know if was your choice, but...IMO...
Beyond Horrible decision. If you posses a PS3, then there should be nothing on eath capable of making someone buy 2K mediocre baseball games over one of the best representations of a sport of all time.
The Show is most realistic Baseball game ever! and one of the best sports games of all time.
A waste of money in buying 2K.Comment

Re: Which game: MLB 2K12 or The Show?
Franchise mode I would say is better on 2k, but the game is a nightmare in all sorts of other areas.
It takes a lot of work and a nice PC to get 2k to the point where it is playable.Comment

It's a shame that most likely there will be no 2K13. An upgraded graphics engine maybe similar to what NBA2K13 is using would of done wonders for the mlb 2k franchise. Sometimes you have to find the right balance between Sim and Arcade. When I say Arcade it is in reference to graphics. I think that is The Show 12 main selling point which are the graphics. Graphics will get the younger market....Comment
