Wait another couple months and get 13, you can bet it'll have WBC.

I'm also wondering how much language will be a barrier for me. I know I can always refer to images that translate and what have you, but I'd like to be able to pick up some Japanese just by recognition alone.

Can that ball trail be turned off?
I would say as a beginner start with 2010 or 2011, they are much more forgiving. In 2012 PYS raised the strike zone higher so you're going to see more strikes. Some loved the change and some hated it (personally I'm ok with it.) My biggest problem in 2012 is that pitchers control is too good no matter what setting you have it on. Again, Konami did this to keep scores low and in line with NPB league averages. In 2010 & 2011 you can really work counts and pound poor pitchers. We'll have to see how 2013 pans out in that area. Keep in mind though that pitchers don't have over-powering stuff so they are nibblers by nature - something you'll have to get used to. But you'll see more mistake pitches in pre-2012 versions.

In regards to the language barrier it's really about how serious you want to get. I'd say a new player would progress something like this...

Navigating menus, controls and starting an exhibition game: Super simple, menus are cartoony and a child could breeze through them. You'll have to read a few pages on our site to get going.

Settings: Real simple, just follow our guide. The game is too easy out of the box, so just put the main settings (like pitch difficulty) at 3/4 high and make small tweaks from there.

Pitch Types: Every time a pitch is thrown you'll want to know what it was (curve, Forkball etc.) Just look at the text which appears on the screen after each pitch and print out our "pitch types" page and keep it handy. Simple

Block Signs & Defensive shifts. Just print out the charts and keep them handy until you have it down by memory. There's not alot of them so it's pretty simple.

In-game, Post game & pause menu screens: Very easy to learn, you'll have them down quick.

Special Skills: After you play some exhibition games and get comfortable you'll want to learn the "special skills." This will take some time and memorization but it's worth it. I would just start out memorizing the first 2 letters of each skill to make it easier. Again, print these out and have them handy when playing.

Pennant Mode: The menus are very simple. The hardest part is trying to figure out what's going on when you get random messages. We covered the most common messages, and most the time you can figure out what's going on by looking at your roster. For example if you see a starting pitcher moved to your minor league roster & unavailable to be sent up for 30 days then you can conclude the message stated he had an injury and has to rest.

Post Season Transactions / Draft: Real simple, we spent a good deal of time breaking this down so it should be understandable to a novice.

Other than that the most frustrating part is that players are not listed in English, so you'll have to look at their jersey number and find out who they are at this site...

Nippon Professional Baseball Organization Official WebSite

Now sometimes during a game you can see the names on the back of their jerseys in English. Still, it will take some time to get to know the players. Fortunately there's only 12 teams

Then you have the broadcasting in Japanese. Strangely myself and most everyone on our forum loves it, the commentators are very enthusiastic and really elevate the game during big moments.

Strangely enough, me too. Hearing every video, I love that! It's like foreign films, especially horror films; they're more creepy because of the different language and the different culture. Even if you remake an American version shot for shot, with the one difference being the language (and even if you see the American version first), the power is still gone from it.

I'll eventually look into getting one of these games for sure! I know I should jump on this now, but I'm busy enough as is.

Always been intrigued by this series, and have been meaning to pick up one of them some time.

          1. Where's a good place to start with the series?
          2. Is Aoki and Darvish, or any of the other recent guys to come over to MLB on any of the recent versions?

I would highly recommend PYS 2010 for starters. It's still my favorite of the series, and it should be fairly cheap now. PYS 5K is underrated in my opinion, but it's still not on the level of 2010 for overall package.

Both are in 2010. Only Darvish is in 2011. Check eBay. Go to Youtube to see what the games all look like.

Thanks for the heads-up. I just ordered what looked to be the last one at Amazon, hopefully the order gets filled.

I've been looking at videos for this game for a few years and decied to take the plunge. The gameplay looks fun and different, hope I can figure it out!

I'll post my experience when I get the game in about a week. May need some support from you experts....

Thanks to Muka for all his contributions. He did all the hard work and showed tremendous creativity in the construction of his Spirits Translation website. He makes this great game accessible. We all owe him our gratitude.

I checked the Amazon site today and I am glad to see the game sold out at $39.99. Hopefully the "jpngoodies" people will grab a few more copies for sale, or will make PYS 2012 available at this great price.

I am enjoying PYS 2011. It's a great baseball fix until Spring Training starts.

Actually it was Vern aka "Spirts Tranlation" who created the web site and had the idea of translating the game. Muka is the fellow who allowed it all to happen with his expert translations.

Kind of a dual effort. I'd give them an A+.

Thanks guys, never thought the translations would get this big. It's like the Winchester House, we just keep adding & adding and it will never get 100% done. The game is super deep but we got the key stuff covered.

Bdolski, there is a Pennant (season) mode where you play & manage the team. In PYS 2010 you can go 6 years, and in 2011 (with the re-vamped player progression system in place) you can go 20 years. Check out pages 1 & 2 of this thread, I covered the differences between the versions pretty well. You can't go wrong with 2010 - stellar gameplay and it has all the stars before they retired or came to the MLB etc.
