ASB preview in OXM

Official Xbox Mag has a "spring training" article rounding up early looks at the new baseball games. Here's what they have to say about ASB05 (keeping in mind that they said ASB04 was absolutely unplayable):

Last year's score: 7.7

How's it look?: Strangely, it looks a lot worse than last year's sharp game. It looks like it's been PS2-ized.

How's it play: Better, though last year's wasn't playable at all due to a horrible pitcher-batter interface. It is now possible to get through a whole game and not go insane.

Coolest feature: Just like last year, it's the treasure trove of stuff a baseball nut would love. Tons of ballparks, legendary players, mid-inning trivia, and more.

Biggest weakness: They're touting the over-the-shoulder fielding camera as their biggest strength, but it still needs work. The "Broadcast Camera" rocks though.

Online: Yessiree, Bob.

The final word: ASB is shaping up to be a solid baseball title that will be playable and fun but might not blow anybody away. It's sure to get a higher score than last year.


These were by far the worst things it said about any of the new baseball games it previewed.

Thanks for posting this cub. I've liked the pitcher/batter matchup in ASB (aside from the no-contact-with-the-bat problem that they hopefully fixed this year), much more so than I like Sega's. (Actually, I though WSB for dreamcast had the best pitcher/batter matchup I've ever seen, but it's gone to hell IMO since Blue Shift took over the series).

I wonder if the broadcast cam is new. Anybody seen anything on this in any of the other threads?

Remember that this preview was probably written sometime in December - a point where there's still about 2 months left in development...and this is only one man's opinion. Remember, he said last year's game was unplayable (to himself, of course)...while many of us here enjoyed last year's version despite it's subpar gameplay.

Anyone else getting the feeling that the games that come out this year won't be as great as we thought? Of course, we all know how expensive it is to dedicate all your resources to one product!
