I played HH2k2 and 2k3 and bought ASB 05 yesterday. It is a great game. To be fair, I have never played MVP or WSB. Still, this is a great game and has many of the same features as HH. The franchise mode is great and the graphics are awesome.

I have purchased all 3 games so far this year. Each game this year has something different to offer that is fun. I have not found any one of them to have the holding power or interest level that high heat had. Unfortunately, a complete basball package will be found in 4 games this year and not one. When you are playing one game you wish you were playing the other because something is missing. For myself, I have just finished updating all the rosters for last years high heat. That is where I will spend my time this baseball season!!!

Re: Any former HH players tried ASB ?

Just the nature of your question and the fact that you are a former HH player tells me you want to know if this is a realistic game. YES!

I may look at baseball games a little differently than other gamers. My opinion of a baseball game rests soley on one criteria. How well does the game represent the real life experience of playing that sport? For me, that means ignoring who has the better graphics, ignoring who is on the cover of the box, ignoring the name of the company who made the game, ignoring what the reviewers say, and ignoring the marketing campaigns for the games. My criteria isn't for everyone but it works for me.

Here are things I have to have in a game:

                        1. I have to be rewarded for working the count and being patient, which means I have to be able to draw walks. That happens in ASB and not MVP or MLB

                        2. I want the AI to be smart. I accept it won't be perfect but I would like to see the AI make smart moves like lefty/righty matchups, sacrifice bunts, hit and runs, pitching around my sluggers with men on base, and pulling the starter at the right time and using the appropriate reliever at the right time. Again, I think ASB does this best.

                        3. The AI must be aggressive on the bases and must try to steal with speedier players. ONLY ASB does this appropriately.

The list of things ASB does better than the other games is quite long. And while the game suffers a few lapses it is my choice as best baseball game, most closely resembling HH. I bought MVP and tried very, very, hard to like it because I had high hopes for it but the AI is poor. The computer swings at almost every strike, walks are nearly impossible to come by even when facing a pitcher with known control problems. The CPU does not steal which makes the game way to static for me. In concept, I liked the pitching meter but in practice it is too easy to master. While it may be true that as your pitcher tires his green zone shrinks, if you have good reflexes you can still hit the center of the green and place the ball where you want. With both ASB and MLB (maybe MLB does it even better) you cannot cheat the location if the pitcher is tired. Try taking Kerry Wood into the 7th or 8th inning in either of those games when he is tired and try to hit your spots and see what happens.

I also bought MLB and I believe that also plays better than MVP and almost as good as ASB but it has a few real game killers. One is the lack of walks. Another is the 10 pitcher cap. I can't live with that because I like to carry 12 pitchers like most National League teams.

People like different games for different reasons so I don't like when someones opinion is ripped apart or praised to vehemently. This is just my take on it, the way I see it for ME. I don't have a vested interest or dislike for any particular game developer. I usually try them all and keep what's real for me.

                        Hope that helps.

Great post. I agree with you. There is problems with ASB, but I just think it is as close to the real thing as you are going to get.

I do own MVP, and have not sold it yet. I do want to give it a fair shake yet, I think that it has some great features, they just need to fix the obvious issues.
