    fielding and stealing

have played about 5 games for the ps2 version of asb05. i'm having trouble fielding the ball in the outfield after giving up (what should be) a single. i think that i have my outfielder lined up with the ball and the ball just zooms by. do you have to have a base button or the cutoff-man button pressed to field the ball in the outfield or am i just not lining things up right?

also, i have no clue how to steal. yes, i read the manual and it says pre-pitch (while the opposing pitcher's pitches are still visible i'm assuming) to press L1 + the base you want to steal i believe. am i not pressing the buttons correctly or at the right time?

I can answer the first thing...... I find the game really picky on fielders trying to pick up the ball. You seem to ahve to go over the EXACT pixel to pick up the ball. I don't know if it's mental or not, but I find if I hit the throw button just before I approach the ball, it helps by "sucking" it up into the glove..........

Stealing... hold the base button (the one you're on) and then quickly press the advance button.

It's funny, nobody else mentions the most important part of stealing that so far I haven't seen in any other games: You can only do it on pitchers with slow deliveries to the plate, and catchers with weak arms. You have to press the steal button the second the pitcher gets into his delivery or else chances are likely you'll get thrown out.

I watch the leg kick. It's nearly impossible for me to steal on a slidestep.

                            Re: fielding and stealing

I agree with pressing the throw button when trying to grab a ball off the ground. Whoever gave that tip has saved my a lot of extra baggers.I also found if you can't get the lock on for the fly ball to keep moving. You have a better chance of catching it on the move than standing there still in the bulls-eye without the lock on.

Sometimes pitchers will forget to slide step once in a while, even when you have a fast guy on base. Wait it out and see if he doesn't forget and gives you one pitch with the big leg throw - then run.

How about the snap throw? or pick mid-windup? I have been able to do each about twice and could never do it again. What is the secret?

You think the fact the controls are a bit on the quirky side and sparsley documented could be one of the reasons this game gets so many negative reviews? It pisses me off that this game is so close to perfect if they would just spend a year polishing the hell out of everything instead of adding new stuff.
