I just read the RBI 15 interview, I liked it, was a good read. Got me thinking as I think we classify RBI as arcade. As I had a few cold ones (very common in my threads) I got to thinking.
Is RBI 15 or other type of, what I call Pick up and Play, games arcade? I consider games like Baseball Simulator 1.000, Bigs, Base Wars, Super Baseball 2020, MLB Slugfest, Mario SLuggers, Wii Baseball, all arcade titles. Rockets, robots, 900 foot home runs, Mario, mii's, swinging at every pitch. Fun, arcade, quick games.
But I'd consider games like The Show, 2k series, Bases Loaded, Hardball, Ootp, Mogul, All Star Baseball, Triple Play, EA MVP, Ken Griffey Winning Run; I'd consider sim one way or the other. Stats, longer games, managing rosters, learning how to play, working pitch counts.
But Pickup and Play to me is a whole different genre. No robots, not leaf ball pitches (thats for the Baseball Sim 1.000 fans like me), no 2 hour games, no 900 foot homeruns but also, no 120 pitch counts, slightly or possibly overly exaggerated player attributes (which I like because there is a ton of separation in the original RBI game), have to manage your roster to a point.
I'd consider, original RBI, Baseball Stars, Ken Griffey Presents MLB and many other games from my era pick up and play. You had to manage your rosters, there wasn't 30 runs per game, it was darn fun and easy to play. Most of those I listed kept stats too.
Just thinking outside the box as I usually do. What qualifies a game as arcade? For me, it is over the top action, NHL Hitz, NBA Jam, Bigs, Sega Soccer Slam (Or whatever it was) is what qualifies those as arcade.
Does, ease of play, simple controls and possible lack of depth qualify as arcade? There is middle ground here and I find that the "arcade" tag is getting a lot of negative buzz these days.
