Re: ESPN, MVP, and All-Star...something's missing

I'm with you guys. High Heat's death was bad for anyone that wanted an extremely realisitic Baseball game. It's a shame really but true sims are just hard to keep in business. Games like High Heat and Inside Drive (for the NBA) always got killed in ratings because they didn't have the bells and whistles that EA games made casual gamers get used to.

IMO, the sports games have gotten worse and worse as this generation of consoles has gone on because it's becomming clear to developers that the only way for them to stay in the game is to lean towards arcade gameplay with more fluff.

I'm actually going to go out tomorrow and look for a used version of High Heat for either the Xbox or PC. I'm disapointed at myself for trading it in.

BTW, has anyone still been upgrading High Heat rosters from the last version of that game for the PC? If I get the Xbox version, can I get an updated roster if I buy the action replay?

For PC, I'd check out either baseballsimcentral.com or highheat2004.net. There are guys over there still playing HH2004 so I'd guess that someone has updated rosters.

For Xbox, I don't think you'll find any. At least I never could. I tried action replay, but I didn't see any rosters. I guess most Xboxer's gave up on HH or didn't upload new rosters.

I'm so glad i held on to my copy of high heat for the xbox and pc. And if you venture over to highheat2004.net i think there are people over there still updating their rosters...its a good place to start looking.

I disagree with you a bit about your point of sports games having gotten worse. I think we've come leaps and bounds since the days of the old of tecmo bowl. I know i have fond memories of playing games like tecmo bowl just like many other people here do. But was Tecmo Bowl realistic? NO. Are the games more realistic now? In my opinion, they're 100 times more realistic now. And they continue to move toward sporting realism. So to say that the games have gotten worse and worse, i think is a bit of an overstatement.

However, i completely agree with your point about developers trying lean toward eye candy now. And i think this is what all developers have going against them. Because of the leaps and bounds in the graphical presentation of games, one would figure there would be an equal jump in AI programming. So almost indirectly everyone's expectations are shot WAY UP. I know from my own personal experience, each year when a game comes out, my expectations are pretty high. I see the previews. I see this incrediblely real rendering of my favorite athlete running around in the previews. And then when i finally get my grubby little hands on the game i'm so disappointed to find out that the opposing team won't steal a base, my left-handed batters can't hit a homerun, the goalies on the cpu controlled team are superhuman, my defensive backs don't play defense at all, and etc...etc...

Anyway, got off the topic a bit there...but that was a good discussion topic you brought up!

Hopefully by the time the new year rolls around, we'll have a good idea if there will be a third baseball choice for us xbox owners. I know i have my fingers crossed!

None of the games are perfect, but I found that on the the highest difficulty (with slight slider tweaks), ESPN plays a pretty good game of baseball. Not High Heat, but pretty good. It does have some annoying bugs/glitches, though.

Here's hoping Microsoft will resurrect the High Heat franchise someday.

going into this yr i was thinking either .... espn or mvp.. but then i stumbled on a gme title i only knew about from my sons n 64 ... asb... well i was very very leary... but when i first went to the mlbcenter.com forums i started getting into the dicussions with the lead guy on the design team and if you want real baseball and the deepest most realistic franchise...

                    rule five draft
                    arbittration

when i first turned on the game and saw the stadiums.. i was hooked... i cant go a day without playing at least one game..

the commentary is awesome, the stadiums are 99.9% perfect huge life size scale...it is awesome.. i love it.. and im very sad it is gone... all i can say is if anyone is looking for a true baseball experience asb is the way to go... just give it a week... yes it has it's flaws but there will never be a perfect game...

i too tried mvp... couldnt hit to save my lfe so i dumped it...high heat had its flaws just like any other game.. it just depends on your personal feel ... and asb is the only one for me...

Although I hated the graphics I loved High Heat.
I've never got into a baseball game so much and it looks like I probally never will again
Since then I've played the last 2 years of MVP and had a good time with it, however I've never came close to finishing a season.
