    About to rent 2k5

Really looking forward to seeing how this game plays.

Before I fire it up I was wondering if someone could give me an overview of the ideal settings. I know this game took a lot of tweaking, so a brief summary of settings, sliders, etc...would really help me out.

After I get the feel for it, I also wouldn't mind playing some of you guys online.

    Thanks!

True Aim batting is a lot easier than Cursor. Maybe start with User Contact and Power @ 50. I play with Contact @ 15, so 50 shouldn’t be too low.

AI batting is really hard to pin down. It depends on how good you are, how you pitch and to a degree which pitching interface you use. It’s easier to hit your spots with Kzone for example, so CPU batting sliders will need to be higher if you go that way. I’d suggest you start with AI Skill @ 50-60 AI Contact @ 75-85 and AI Power @ 45-50. I’d also highly recommend turning off vibration, pitch cursors and hot and cold zones (located in Presentation: Pitcher Stats and Batter Stats).

Pitch Speed @ 40 is where many play. Maybe start @ 25-35.

AI Take Strikes around 35, AI Take Balls around 65, and AI Throw Strikes around 40 should do it.

A big part of the game are the AI Corner and AI Location Sliders. The lower these are, the easier it is to tell balls from strikes. I prefer them way down (10) which helps me wait for pitches, which is why I can lower User Contact to 15. Maybe try them @ 50 and see what you think.

Base Running and Fielder Speed should be @ 40. And make sure you set up your custom sliders off of the Pro difficulty level. The catcher’s Throwing Power is 65 on Pro, which makes the base running and stealing game work very well.

Classic because it feels like pitching -- imagine Kzone batting where you have to line up the crosshairs to make contact... doesn't work. Effort pitching is Classic with the added step of determining the speed of the pitch. That's even more realistic from a baseball perspective, but the effort meter that pops up is another distraction that breaks the immersion spell for me or something. And Kzone is just too accurate as well IMO -- less control with Classic and Effort.

20 I believe, but I have to check that (later). What I'm seeing with that is maybe a 55-60% steal success rate with runners in the 80+ Speed range. I can't imagine anyone wanting to make it more difficult than that, but there's lots of room with that setting to make it easier if needed. And I always steal from the batter's perspective -- a lot easier that way as well.

After a couple days of playing, I have to say that I'm pleasantly surprised by this game.

The game is obviously just soaked in baseball. The commentary, fantastic colours, etc...are all just sublime.

While fielding is completely atrocious, I am loving the pitching and hitting aspects. Using the classic pitching system I find the game feels like real baseball. The batting model from what I've seen, requires you to act quickly and really pay attention at the plate.

You can definitely feel like the game could have used more polish. However, I have great hope for this game in the next gen and think it's on the right path.

jyd28 – The fielding problems are completely fixable with edits. If you end up buying the game, give me a shout. I’ll send you my edited roster – all 900 MLB players – and you can give that a try and see what you think.

Damn baa, what did you change? The jump/dive attributes or what?

If so, let me know what you did, I'll edit them myself.

The only problem is when rookies are signed, they now have the advantage, and they need to be found and changed every year.

People are editing ratings differently. I can only share what I did and what works for me.

I lowered all pitchers’ fielding ratings, with the exception of Arm ratings, to below 20. Plus I lowered their Anticipation ratings to below 10. IMO, these edits are an absolute necessity.

For IN-OF players, I lowered all fielding ratings, including Arm ratings, by as much as 75% (I didn’t lower any ratings below 30 or so). The key rating for IF-OF players is their Jump /Dive rating, yup. The super-sliding IF stab nonsense occurs when that rating is higher than 70 or so. So I just made sure only 1-3 players on each team had a Jump/Dive rating higher than 70, and one of those had to be an OF guy. I have to say that particular edit is working out really well. I’ve been playing a bunch of games with some mediocre teams where the ball might get by the SS who runs toward it but can’t reach it. Then last night I start up a game against the Braves, A few plays into the game I hit what I think is a sure grounder through the hole, but Furcal slides from out of nowhere and grabs the ball.

It’s cool if that happens only once in a while. I suggest you try editing just that one rating and see what you think. It would save you some work in franchise with the rookies.
