a "wait 'til next year" rant and question

When MVP Baseball came out, it got a late start and was missing features, level of game play feel and animations that gamers were demanding. The next year (a short timeframe given the timing of release of the first game) they were able to implement most of these, vastly improving their game. In 2005 the tweaked their improvements and then focused on the add ons.

2K games (or Sega) has been releasing this game since 2002, and it seems that there have only been tweaks to what is done from the get go. For the most part, the animations, player models, batter interface, defensive control, sound effects (did they get the bat to ball contact sound from whacking a plastic grocery bag with a fly swatter?), etc. (I could go on and on) have been used since the first current gen game was released. Yet when asked about changes to the game, problems/gripes that people have with the previous years game, the most common answer, to paraphrase, is “We are looking into that for next year”.

I was a huge defender of the 2k series, particularly in first year of MVP, I felt that video game baseball could not get better on the current gen than the 2k series, but eventually gave in to what evolved into a better game in less than a year. By 2005, MVP was so far superior to 2k it wasn’t even a choice for me anymore. I was hoping that the exclusive license (which I am not in favor of for any sport) would be the spark that 2k needed to get it going, but thus far I have found the information, Q&A, screens and videos very disappointing. Disappointing enough to inspire me to update my MVP 2005 rosters (have to maually update) rather than purchasing a new game this year. Particularly given the amount of "wait 'til next year" answers that are given. I dont feel like paying 40 dollars for a game that the producers are already (subconciously) admitting could be better. I am not saying that 2k is bad, only that it has been stagnant for quite a long time. Its evolutionary pace was lapped by MVP.

I guess what I am really wondering is: How did EA turn MVP into the game that it eventually became in a relatively short timeframe, but 2k seems to be stuck in development redundancy?

Nobody knows, however, we haven't seen the final product yet. Even though some of the stuff looks discouraging, and it does, there are little rays of hope in there, but it is inconsistent. They've got four more weeks to leak some stuff out and let's see what we're looking at a week before game release, then we'll really know.

I'm like you, keeping an updated MVP roster and have the new schedule standing by. I'm also keeping my fingers crossed re MLBThe Show.

        Great question!

When MVP 2003 came out the ground work for the game engine was already in place. It played good except it didn't have the other features. All they did in MVP 2004 was add the little things like warm-up Bullpen, Dynasty mode, old jerseys, manager mode, and more. With 2005, they increased the animations and fixed the glitch 2004 had. If you look at it, MVP 2003 plays exactly like MVP 2005 except the 2005 have all the bell and whistles.

MLB 2k5 ,however, was suppose to be the ground work for the new series, but the game engine was never there to build off of. Kush in fact did the opposite of what EA did and created the bell and whistles way too early and didn't create a basic game engine for the series. So in MLB 2K5, you have the great sound of the crowd, you have the trivia questions, Slamzone, the new graphical upgrade, etc, but the core of the game was never implemented.

Lets look at another baseball franchise, MLB series by sony. MLB 05 played great and had great animations and the game engine was good, but a few things was still not there yet. MLB 06 came out and added the new features while still keeping the gameplay found in MLB 05. MLB 06: the show added more features but still plays just like MLB 05.

IMO, the MVP and MLB series laid out there gameplay first adn added features later. The MLB 2k series is in its 2nd year but have not addressed the core gameplay and animations. Its like they ignored in creating a solid baseball game engine and went for Inside Edge to compensate for gameplay factor.

Kudos to both of you guys on these points as they are absolutely on the money IMO. I want this game to work (badly) because I like the little things that they have added (like catchers calling a game) but I do have reservations.

No new Busch Stadium should say enough about this product. I have played this game since it came out.Im done..they dont care about what the fans want. Go with the Show 06 they listen and respond back to questions.I think they have a bunch of Cub fans making the game ( Wait til next year).

Hey man, all your wishes will be granted next year. It doesn't matter, Kush first time with this game was last year, so this is their 2nd. It took MVP 3 years to get to the level its at, and now wait for 2k6. Read the hands on at IGN, the guys says its the smartes baseball game to date, take it for what it worth. Or you know what you can do....yeah wait 'til next year.

Is this true for the 360 version as well? They claim to have built all the stadiums from the ground up for the 360. If they did, it should be easy for them to update the stadiums (like Turner Field and finally get Fenway right etc.) and add the new Busch. No excuse for the 360 version since they “supposedly” built the game from the ground up.

No, they "supposedly" built the STADIUMS from ground up not the game.
