Is this game really *THAT* bad?

I'm sure this game has some kind of upside to it.

Honestly, all I've really heard about the game is, "it sucks." No specifics.

It seems as though people are just jumping all over this. It's really just two or three people leading the way, but it's as though those few people opened up a floodgate, and now all of a sudden everybody's just tearing this game up.

It may not be as good as The Show or MVP, but is it a bad game?

If I play it in a context separate from The Show or MVP--without thinking of what's better or worse about it as compared to either of those games--can it still be enjoyable?

I'd like some peoples' opinions on this. Just because it's, in the minds of many, worse than those two games doesn't necessarily mean it's not a good, at least playable, game.

I'd like to hear from those who haven't been the few people trolling and/or visciously pimping "their game" and thus making it seem as though many share their opinion.

I know you are trying to find out if you'll like it, but we have one of these threads popping up every day. Check the impressions or other threads, like the "Who likes this game" thread. There's a bunch of impressions for either way, liking or not liking the game. Go rent it and check it ou, that's the best thing you can do to see if you'll like the game.

EDIT - you changed this to a poll, I'll keep this open for now.

MLB 2K5 was extremely buggy, but I still got a lot of fun out of it. I'm expecting the same from this game. A lot of things sliders aren't going to be able to fix, that is for sure. But the pitching and batting are both amazing.

I will get a lot of run out of this game, it is fun despite the flaws.

no, I'll find that out when I buy it. I guess what I want to know is that if it's a bad game in itself, or only bad compared to the other two.

          A great game period.....

A few problems, though, are having to do countless CAPs for the most updated roster, and there are quite a few glitches. Great game on the whole.

I wouldn't count on the poll as being very accurate. Too many trolls and fanboys................

Yeah. That was the point of this thread, though, to get peoples' opinions on the game that haven't been trolling or pimping "their game."

Re: Is this game really *THAT* bad?

Well, I think you can prolly get the opinions you are after just by reading the threads, and if you haven't read any specifics then you aren't paying attention. But to answer your question, yes, I think you can get some fun out of the game. It's not a total-train wreck-waste-of-time baseball game.

That said, games, specifically sports games, don't exist in a vacuum so to discuss it without comparing to other current games im the genre is tough to do. If you don't have a PS2 and The Show isn't an option I think 2K6 can provide you with a good time, particularly when playing with a buddy and removing the AI from the equation.

As a solo game, it just has a very unfinished feel to it. It reminds me a lot of the initial High Heat PC releases before 3DO and Team .366 patched it. If it were not for those patches High Heat would not have been near the game that it was. I get that same vibe here. It's a healthy few fixes away from being *really* good, but those issues are pretty important ones IMO.

2K6 has some of the freshest ideas we've seen in a baseball game in quite some time; it's just a bit underdeveloped and I feel way overpriced at $40.

You shouldn't have done an anonymous poll then if that's what you wanted.

Also you seem to think people have an agenda for disliking this game and that's it's really not 2k's fault that 2K6 is a poor game. IMO, 2K6 is a terrible representation of baseball, and I am not comparing it to anything when saying this. If it was the only baseball video game I had ever played and there was no other choice, I would simply not play video baseball ever again. That's how much I dislike the game.

Compared to the Show, it is a decent game. I still say with a PS2 go with The Show. More complete game imo. Plus seeing all the players real batting stances and throwing motions in that game has made me expect it in every baseball game and this game doesn't have that. Pitching in both games are very good. Hitting is good in both games. Fielding is where both run into problems but I think 2K runs into more. Fielders react too late, infielders take forever to release the ball which leads to a lot of infield hits, rocket for arms. The Show has it's share also, rocket arms and sometimes the ball goes through a fielder. Baserunning is definatly better in The Show. To me 2K would've been a good game had I not already played and loved The Show. That's my opinion.

It is just a clumsy, unfinished game. For example, they added in collision detection, great idea in practice, but when does it show up? It shows up in two cases:

                        1) When you have 3 fielders running towards a ball hit in the shallow outfield/deep infield. Somebody will catch the ball 100% of the time, but somebody else will fall down. I've yet to see two fielders running at each other hit and miss the ball. This happens because the game times catches so perfectly that the fielders arrive the second the ball does, one guy gets the ball and it appears as if the collision detection gets turned off once you have the ball. At least when it comes to other players.....

                        2) Somebody hits a line drive to the outfield wall and it stops on the warning track. You run to get it and you man picks up the ball and "detects" the wall there, falls down and it is a triple if you're lucky. Pretty much a guaranteed inside the park home run.

So what did they actually add as far as collisions that is a useful additon to the game? Absolutely nothing that I have seen so far. The phyics are in there, the wall collisions and player collisions don't look bad, but they happen in completely unrealistic times and never affect the game in a realistic manner.

There is a list a page long I could make of small things like this. the game simply feels unfinished. The pitcher/batter interface is downright amazing on both sides, easily the best I've ever seen. But as people have said before, "once the ball leaves the bat" the game falls apart. Little things like your players needlessly rounding first base and getting thrown out because of it, or being able to pick off CPU runners at 2nd because they round 2nd too far when they hit doubles, just cut the throw to 3rd off and you have about a 50/50 shot at getting the runner WALKING back to second.

The game is fun, the pitching/batting are enough to save the game for me. I enjoyed 2K5 despite its large amount of flaws. 2K6 is a step up, even if it feels unfinished, I will get some fun out of the game.
