    Is IE THE selling point?

Hey fellas, I have been following this game b/c of the IE. Is this a WOW!! type thing where it is just an incredibly deep baseball experience? Is it correct to the players or some random thing? Scouting is a huge part of baseball and this is something that intrigues me.

I am a 31 year old gamer (as of midnight tonight) and I am a baseball addict. I can overlook animations and graphics and such if the baseball is there. Does IE do that? All I have read through the threads is that "it's great" or "it's not all it's cracked up to be". I guess in this rant I am asking if it is realistic and if it reason enough to overlook any other visual flaws. Thanks for any input.

Re: Is IE THE selling point?

I think that it is very deep. It was the selling point for me, but that was something that I wished for, and I could quote myself in that post saying "This would be the selling point of any baseball game" or something like that.

Of course, there is much more that they can do, such as having it progress season to season, have more extreme defensive shifts, and allowing there to be editable flyball/groundball ratios and pull/oppo ratios for hitters, etc.

It is what it is, that's really all I can say. It plays just like it has been laid out on paper for us. If you liked what you've heard about, and if you believe it may be something you'd enjoy playing, try 'er out! If not, let it go...

Well if you've seen the comercial for the game then you'd know

It's actually a very good comercial with Derek Jeter against one of the BoSox pitchers (couldn't tell who it was) and they were using lingo and such for where to pitch the ball to and such.

No IE is very incomplete in it's implementation. IE will tell you a pitcher should throw a fastball between 85-88 MPH and the pitcher actually throws 95 MPH, another example is IE tells you a pitcher throws a curveball when you look at pitchers selection of pitches the curveball is not even an option. IE is very hit and miss some times the information reported in IE is implemented on the player other times it is not.

I think the scouting reports outside of the game itself might be inaccurate, as described above, but the implementation of IE within an actual match is really neat. Especially when you are pitching to batters that you have an IE report for. The catcher will call a recommended pitch. What I've seen is that the system will call pitches that are often out of the zone, and the batter will chase them. I've also seen the system change up what it's calling between at bats (example, might call a lot of low inside fastballs for a batter his 1st AB, and then his 2nd AB confuse him with outside curves).

I'm impressed and excited about how IE is implemented with the whole calling pitches thing. I've never seen that before in a game.

There were even a couple of times where the catcher was calling everything outside of the zone for a batter. I questioned that and decided to throw a pitch on the corner, and what happened? Batter hit a homerun! I guess he was on a hot streak (since player and team hot streaks apparently are in the game also) and the IE system knew about it and was trying to avoid pitching anythign that he could hit. That burned me twice until I learned that sometimes you should walk a hot batter.

The one thing that inside edge does that really helps the batter vs. pitcher interaction is that it seems to make it so pitch selection and location are no longer random. What I mean by this is that when playing MVP last year I always felt that opposing pitchers would throw any of their pitches at any given time and to any location. Now with this game it seems like fastball pitchers rely on their fastball (even if they have 5 pitches), some pitchers (Glavine for sure) will just pound the outer half of the plate, and guys with offspeed stuff like to change speeds. It really makes each pitcher seem like a different entity and is really quite nifty.

Not only that, but they also have your player's Inside Edge, too. I suggest that you look at some of your player's weaknesses... at times, they'll follow them pretty accurately. But most of the time, they'll go off of their stuff.
