I could see changing something if I was going from the NL to the AL. You got to have your game on point in the AL. The NL is like the minor leagues. I dont know why he changed. Maybe he figured that it wouldnt be so risky to change now that he is in the NL, because the hitters are so bad. Can you tell I have an AL bias?

I wouldn't go that far. I'm pretty sure Ryan Howard and Albert Pujols (just to name a few) can stand up to any AL hitter. I think the AL is deeper than the NL right now though, but it's not by a huge margin.

I do agree that AL lineups in general are better due to the DH. That's a large factor in the higher ERA's in the AL.

Zito has lost velocity the past few years, and he has been less successful because of it. He added 10 pounds of muscle to his lower half this year and I think he is looking to throw harder. Zito wants to throw harder since that is what made him more successful.

It does sound like his new delivery will give him increased velocity. He was never a hard thrower though. But his deception is top notch. And his deuce is one of the best. I cant wait to see what this delivery looks like.

I would be absolutely irate if I were the Giants (or their fans) and I had just spent $126 million on this guy. He could have cruised for a year or two simply because he's going to a weaker offensive league without having to rework his entire game. Especially since he pitches backward in the first place and those kind of guys tend to throw off the fastball-centric NL. He also risks injury and ineffectiveness with this decision. Very weird.

It kind of reminds me of when the Blue Jays signed Burnett to that rather large contract and in the press conference he said something along the lines of "I'm glad to be working with so-and-so the pitching coach because I think he'll be able to fix a lot of my problems." Absolutely hilarious when your big free agent signing comes out and the first thing he says to the media is "I'm basically a big flawed fastball hucker with injury problems."

Irate? It's spring training. He's got plenty of time to either perfect this or scrap it.

Plus, Zito has never been an April pitcher. His numbers get a lot better as the season goes on.
