How does the alternative to the swing stick work? Is it just timing or is there a zone hitting aspect to it?

I believe it's timed hitting. (press the A button)

Yeah swing with A and use the left analog to direct where you are swinging, (ex: MVP).

Is it the same as MVP in the sense that its kind of like zone hitting? I mean, are you supposed to pull inside pitches and go the opposite way with outside pitches, thereby making it kind of like zone hitting?

Yeah exactly like that. You get a guess pitch icon which they call the hitters eye, if you guess in the correct area that you locate the icon then you will see the ball appear there.

I just got done trying it. It's more like time hitting. I actually hit the ball better just swinging with the "a" button without directing the left stick at all! I wish it was more like MVP baseball! If you hold it up and inside before the pitch is thrown, it actually moves your "hitter's eye" location. It says that holding up "after" the pither is in motion for a fly ball, and down for a grounder. I wished it had a zone type of hitting instead.
