This is a very good way to use the Batter's eye to be effective at the plate but there's another approach that can be combined with it.

(Notice I said Batter's Eye and not Hitter's Eye, I insist people use the term used in the game!.....yes I'm anal! hah! But this way when people search for the option in the menus, they will find it)

Alot of gamers seem to think hitting is a guessing game, or a fluke to actually hit the ball. But just like in real life the Batter's Eye can (and should) be used to watch a specific part of the plate as you suggested but ALSO can and be used to guard a part of the plate you personally or your specific batter is weak against. This is how I use it mostly.
For strong or power hitters, I use it to simply choose a location I want the ball. For weak hitters I use it to guard a spot...

      I'll give you an example.
Say I'm batting with a righty vs a left handed pitcher. I noticed in previous at bats this pitcher likes to jam righties with hard sliders down & in.
I will place the Batter's Eye down and in, just on the edge of the strike zone. (Btw I go by feel, since I turned off the strikezone).
Now I can look for pitches I like, up or down the middle AND guard my weak spot with the Batter's Eye down & in...

If the pitcher throws in the spot i'm guarding (down and In) the Batter's eye will show this and allow me to
      a) make contact
      or
      b) foul it off.

Hope this was clear, it's easier to do it than to break it down.
This works wonders for hitting. Definitly try it.

I actually think this is very realistic. Thome is a great HR hitter, so even a perfect "payoff pitch" isn't always going to get by him. Just think about a real life game, in a "payoff pitch" (aka clutch) situation an MLB pitcher will either decide to A) Pitch around a batter like Thome, or B) Go right at him with his best stuff and risk getting hurt (like what happened here).

The more I play this game the deeper it seems to be, some of the most frustrating aspects are what's going to make this game stay in my PS3 for a very long time, it's challenging in a realistic way.
        - Deciding when to pitch to/pitch around a bigtime hitter.
        - Working pitch counts and learning not to take hacks at every pitch.
        - Beanball battles.
        - Manager arguments.
        - Dealing with AI that actually attempts suicide squeezes, etc.
        etc...
Yeah I nearly flipped when the cpu tried to pull this on me in a game a few days ago... I accidentally threw a ball way out the strike zone and nailed the guy by a mile at home but it sure was cool to see them attempt it.

worked good so far. Only time I tried to control the hit was when it was a fat pitch and the ball icon was on the screen. I actually drew a walk too.

Good to hear. When I was trying to influence the ball all the time I could never get a hit. This style has made the game a lot more enjoyable for me. There's a good variety of ground balls/fly balls - all depends on timing and what pitch you're swinging at
