So Im IN EB store looking for MLB2K7

When I First walk in they have racks of EA sports games, and i do mean racks on display(you almost have to walk around it to get in the store). Then i pass the desk and they have a hand written sign( like they got orders from corporate to put this up befrore they can have it printed "we are taking pre-orders for Madden 2008)with a picture and another of a stadium advertising NCAA football. Kind of early no? I thought with all the splash of MLB2K7 they would have displays or a demo playing....nothing?
I finally make my way to the far back wall ,in the left corner find 1 copy on display. I just left thinking is " Electronics " Boutique owned by the same " Electronic "Arts
Sure looks like it by me.

    It's all about the money.

It's really as simple as that.
"It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

"You'll not find more penny-wise/pound-foolish behavior than in Major League Baseball." - Rob Neyer

HAHAH i know what you mean, when i went to EB to pick up my copy i noticed the same thing, though i did go into a Gamestop and noticed a even layout. Maybe Ea probably has a deal with EB about advertising in store.

EB and Gamestop are owned by the same company.

You are so right.. EA advertising is everywhere at EB and GS. What makes matters worse the other day an EB employee was saying how bad MLB 2k7 is and MVP is so much better. I told him he was out of your mind!! Then I noticed his shirt...It was an EA shirt he had on with all the little EA game logos. I said how can you be partial with a shirt on like that. He just laughed.
I brought MLB 2K7 and proudly walked out the store shaking my head!!

EAsports sells games not because most of their sports games are great but because of their aggressive marketing and tactics..without those two things, EAsports would probally be in limbo with their sports lineup.

They probably pay for that level of exposure. Similar to Blu-ray association pays for endcap space in Bestbuy.

Which is why I stay away from EB Games as much as possible. I feel like throwing up every time I go there - they try to rip you off at every turn.

Re: So Im IN EB store looking for MLB2K7

Guys, EA Sports produces many of their highest selling games. Certainly their highest selling sports games. EB/Gamestop is a company who's business is to sell games. Why wouldn't they be promoting their highest selling games?

If you owned your own game store, the idea is to make money. I'm assuming you would also carry the most copies of the titles that sold the most copies. It doesn't do you any good to buy copies of titles that sit on the shelves until you discount them. If you had a "sure thing" like Madden you would also want to order as many copies as you possibly could sell within the first week.

I've started renting and waiting for sales because I'm tired of paying top dollar at EB for new releases (and getting far below market value on trade ins, making renting the most economical choice). But if I decide I have to have a game on the first day I will probably go there, because I know they will have it as soon as anyone else.

Some of you work at corporate stores, the idea is always to sell lots and lots of whatever sells best. Some who are younger (and others that just don't care) may not know about the 80/20 corollary (Pareto's Principle), but basically it is the understanding that 20% of what we do accounts for 80% of our productivity. I'm sure that the same is true in the gaming industry, and most EA games will fall in that 20% for their retailers.

Have you heard of Vilfredo Pareto? He was the early 20th century Italian economist credited with establishing the 80:20 rule, sometimes called 'The Vital Few, the Trivial Many.'

Pareto established that 80 percent of the land in Italy was owned by 20 percent of the population. He later applied this principle to other areas of his life, noting that 80 percent of his garden peas were produced by 20 percent of the peapods.

Today, the 80:20 rule is regularly cited in business:

                  * 80 percent of customer complaints relate to only 20 percent of your products and services.
                  * 20 percent of your sales force produces 80 percent of your company revenues.
                  * 80 percent of your profits come from 20 percent of your customers.
                  * 80 percent of your marketing success comes from 20 percent of your programs.
                  * 20 percent of the e-mails you receive contain 80 percent of the information you need (the other 80 percent of e-mails are redundant, irrelevant or unwanted).

The corollary to the 80:20 rule is that 80 percent of your efforts produces just 20 percent of the results. That translates to a lot of wasted effort and not much return.
Link to google search for 80/20 corollary

In short, you can hate eb/gamestop all you want, but there is a reason that many (most?) successful businesses follow this model - there isn't much return on the other 80% of effort you can give, so you should just concentate on the 20% of your business that actually makes a difference. That's why I have time to give economic dissertations on a Friday afternoon while I'm killing time at work

As you know, this is just one of the many threads that all say the same thing...just thought I'd educate in one of them.

If EB wants to sell the most games why not promote the "hot" game of the week instead of burying it in the back. And why display a sign for taking madden pre-orders already. Seems to me they are trying to limit 2K exposure with the release of MLB2k7 and take pre-orders(hastily with a hand written sign) for Madden to take away from APF2K7.

These type of EA/2K threads never turn out good.... I'm also not sure how much of it has to do with MLB2K7 so I'm locking it.
