Would someone help explain batters' eye?

So I just picked up the game and enjoyed the first game, but I never was able to understand batters' eye. Do I need to do this on every pitch? Is there a negative if I guess wrong? Does it affect where the bat is "aimed"--so if I don't use it is the bat always aimed in the center, even if a ball is low and away?

    Thanks for the help.

The main benefit to Batter's Eye is if you guess right, then the ball will show up in the zone, and you know where it's going.

There's no penalty if you guess wrong.

It's more like guessing, and if you get lucky, you might get a nice pitch to hit.
