Limit to # of players you can trade?

    1. What is the limit of players a team can trade in real life? Or is there one?

    2. Why in video games can we only trade 3, or 4 players (NBA 2K8) at a time?

The reason I ask is if I wanted to make a trade for say Johan Santana as the Phillies GM I would have to give up quantity rather than quality, but if I can only trade 3 guys at a time then there is nothing I can do unless I send'em Rollins or Utley or something like that...Which would never happen.

So why in video games do we have a limit...? I can't remember how many it was in MLB 2K7...Maybe 3 per team at a time... But in real life you see the O's getting 4 players in return for Tejada, and possibly getting even more from Seattle for Bedard.

    What's w/ the limits?

    1. No limit.
    2. No idea. That's always bothered me. While 4x4 or 5x5 trades are uncommon in baseball, it does occasionally happen.

The big problem I see is that if you do an uneven trade, the computer needs to fill out it's roster. If you trade Tejada to the CPU and get back 4 players, the CPU needs to fill 3 slots. So the code needs to be intelligent enough to recognize this and needs to pickup 3 free agents or move guys from the minor league system up to the MLB level.

That would seem like it would be easy to do since the CPU has to do that at the end of the year when they let players go to the FA pool.

It would even be better if the CPU just promoted guys already in the organization...and then either generated new minor leaguers to fill the lower spots.
I'm not a big fan of mid season FA signings...it doesn't happen that much.(I'm not saying never...just that you see movement in the organization more often).

I agree...I wish that you couldn't just move players up and down at will too...that there were options and waivers.

But why can we only trade 3 or 4 players at a time...It doesn't make any sense.

1 - There is no limit. You can generally do whatever you want.

2 - I'm guessing they limit the number of pieces in a trade so they can more effectively balance the trading AI and make it harder to just overload a deal and get it accepted (you could do this in Madden a few years ago. Throw your last five draft picks and five scrubs in a trade and get just about anybody in the league).

for instance, making it so you couldn't offer 15 players for Johan Santana, and just keep adding scrubs until the deal was finalized.

for the developers its a bit of a catch 22. limit the number of pieces you can trade and people complain they can't make deals like in the majors. let people go crazy and do whatever they want and people complain they can make deals in the game that would never go through in the majors.

While I guess I can understand that...Why do they care what I do. I wouldn't do something like that myself as I strive for realism as much as possible, but being limited to only trading 3 players is ridiculous.

well history would say if they go that route they get flamed for shipping a game with "a broken trading system" that lets you "unrealistically trade for whoever you want" and "takes the fun out of franchise play."

True on that front. There has to be a better medium though. The limit of 3 players is ridiculous.

i agree. i think something like 5 would be perfect (you rarely see a deal with more than that involved from either side).

Lets start the petition...5 players per team...We will not settle for 3...
