    Redo

    Redo - Just my opinion.

I have played baseball video games since the NES days. I, like many of you have owned a baseball game every year that I have owned a console. I, like you have bought systems in hopes for new versions of baseball games that promise new levels of realism and fun.

I, like many of you was also extremely disappointed when I finally got my hands on World Series Baseball for the Dreamcast. Why do I bring this up? Because I, like you am a hardcore fan of video game baseball. My favorite all time baseball games came from the Genesis and the Saturn in WSB. I have followed the 2K series since it first came to be. With the huge disappointment WSB was on the DC I wanted a redo, a retake on the sport and we saw it in the 2K series. Since then the 2K games quality have been a see-saw of bad to average. I, like many of you migrated to the MVP series which came from the average to bad Triple Play games and MVP is a baseball game I truly love. This isn’t about the amazing MVP games, its about the 2K games.

In my opinion, the 2K games need to be redone from the ground up MVP style. No not in the same play style as MVP (although many people would love it) but the same way EA did right by redoing TP into MVP, MLB 2K needs to be redone, and rewritten as “something else” 2K. When I first heard 2K had the exclusive rights to MLB for 3rd parties I was very upset but I gave MLB 2K a chance, and after 2 tries I almost quit on them. I found MLB The Show which I think is fantastic. I digress this is not about what The Show does right it’s about what MLB 2K does wrong.

Having the exclusive right to the MLB license can be a great thing if the games were better. I admit the game today does look better than the last version and that one was better than the one before it but the game still has deep flaws with the way the flow of the game is presented. Maybe it’s the awkward flight of the ball, or the animations that seem old to me. I believe it would be in 2K’s best interest, to take a brand new team (with Brinkman included I have trust in him) and begin a brand new series. From the ground up. It’s time for a rebuilding year, and I mean total re-haul, new dialog, new animation, new physics engine, new art style, new mo-cap new modeling,, new camera angles, new everything. Maybe next year 2K gives 2K9 to the old team and lets them do a port with a few experimental features meanwhile this new team gets started now on making a brand new game, and they can use the 2 year window to their advantage. I think it will be a great service to us. Right now it can be as polished as they want, with a few great ideas for bullet points it will always be held back by the spirits of the old series.

Maybe I am crazy, maybe the sales of baseball games don’t allow the type of cash to have 2 different teams working on a baseball game. From watching all the videos so far, and 2 innings of video today. There is something fundamentally wrong with the 2K series, and deny it if you will but if you are as hardcore baseball fan as I am you know it needs a rebuilding year from the ground up.

I agree.. but apparently this "project" is a 3 year plan and I just dont see it working out. I dunno, 2k7 was such a trainwreck...and I think it would be very hard for Brinkman and the boys to fix it for the better.

      Re: Redo

Ummm...the engine/animation is pretty solid to begin with (shouldn't need an overhaul and 3 years to fine tune at least), it's been gameplay and presentation that have made 2k baseball only decent the past few years.

Remember people, due to the late shipping of 2k6, 2k7 had 2 months fewer development time, and it showed when the game was released. Still, the game looked very well done. There were a few gameplay issues, such as excessive HR's, and the ability to throw 6-8 inning perfect games with every pitcher, but it appears these elements are being addressed. Even the batting system, which i felt was very well done, is getting a tune-up (hopefully with sliders and curves being easier to identify...).

All in all, the game looks to be solid gameplay wise. Its presentation that needs an upgrade. Still, if they nail the gameplay now, we won't be having discussions in 3 years on what needs to be fixed. As i said with madden, get the gameplay working first, then update the presentation as needed.

I honestly mean no disrespect here, but i am so sick of everyone comparing every game that has a ball in it to MVP. Its kinda like dating a girl and talking about your ex all the time.

I was not trying to compare them only to convey my respect for the game. As I said I would like a redo the way EA redid TP for the better.

I don't understand why I see these threads when the new game hasn't even been released yet.

the best game of bball, high heat, no other game has come close to this. Mvp is my second best, now if some company can recreate what was done in high heat, then that would worth a redo.

Of course you can have a good amount of judgment from videos. You can see canned animation, physics, and camera angles these are fundamentals of video game baseball. Of course I will continue to support the games the new pitching system looks fun. I have hope but each and every year some of you get so excited that THIS game now will finally fix it all. It's time to be a bit more forward thinking and understand, the game can be good but with its underlying parts it will never be great.

gosh, not only did I not like MVP 05, I liked 2K7 and the original 2K for Dreamcast.

Gotta go with scooter and yankee on this one, let's withhold judgment until we play the game itself.

I honestly don't know what you are speaking of when you say that you see something fundamentally wrong with the game. I like you have been playing baseball games for a very long time ( actually much longer then you. My first baseball game i ever had was on the Atari 2600) and believe me from the 1982-1984 when that baseball game came out to what we have now, it's light years in how much it has improved. So i find it kind of funny when i hear people grip about little things mainly things that have very little to do with the actual game play it self. Give it a chance, play it first and then if you don't like it fine, get something else.

in the great words of Dr. Martin Luther King: judge not by the color of the skin but by the contents of their character. in a way same hold true here judge the game once you have played it, not just by what you see. Just make sure you have an open mind before you start to play the game, there is no point to play the game when you already made up you mind that you don't like it. Peace

I like 2k7 still. I think it's a solid baseball title, but I agree it's not MVP 05. The reason that people keep comparing baseball titles to MVP 05 is because that game is the Gold Standard™ and all baseball titles are compared to it in the quest to find a new "best" of the genre. Once a game tops MVP 05, then we'll stop talking about MVP so much. Saying let's not bring it up is sort of like talking about great boxing but not mentioning Ali.

Also, I agree with the OP that WSB for the Dreamcast was garbage. I was so mad at them for that! What kind of baseball title has automatic fielding? Bleh - I think I played 3 games of it.

Some of you act as if seeing a video of the game will leave you with no impressions of the gameplay at all. I never said the video will give you full judgement on it. I only said that you can see a fair amount of what is going on with the gameplay from these videos.

Every year some of you say, wait til you play it before you judge it. Of course that is true but these are sometimes the same people that get a bad game and say "wait til next year."

Give up a little hope and realize this game will never be exactly what you want until they decide to rewrite the game, code, animation and everything.
